World Forestry Day

  • On March 21, the world marks World Forest Day, also known as the International Day of Forests. This annual event reminds us of the forests' role in nature. It also highlights the urgent need to protect them.
  • The United Nations established World Forest Day in 1971. The date, March 21, aligns with the Spring Equinox, symbolising nature's balance. Forests help stabilise the climate, store carbon, and support wildlife. They also provide resources that billions of people depend on.
  • This year's (2025) theme is "Forests and Food". It highlights how forests support food security and nutrition. Forests provide fruits, nuts, and medicinal plants.

World Down Syndrome Day

  • World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) is observed every year on March 21.
  • French physician Jerome Lejeune identified Down syndrome as a chromosomal condition (an extra copy of chromosomes), which is now known as trisomy 21. The Brazilian Federation of the Association of Down Syndrome started a global awareness campaign in collaboration with Down Syndrome International and its members.
  • In 2011, the United Nations recognised it and passed a resolution to observe World Down Syndrome annually and later in 2012, The UN General Assembly declared March 21st as World Down Syndrome Day.
  • The theme of World Down Syndrome Day 2025 is "improve Our Support Systems," This theme highlights the importance of strengthening inclusive support systems to ensure individuals with Down syndrome receive the proper care, education, and opportunities they deserve.

International Day of Happiness

  • Every year on March 20, people around the world celebrate the International Day of Happiness,—a day dedicated to joy, kindness, and emotional well-being.
  • The General Assembly of the United Nations passed a resolution 66/281 of 12 July 2012 announcing March 20 as the International Day of Happiness, recognising the relevance of happiness and well-being as universal goals.
  • The resolution was initiated by Bhutan, a country which recognized the value of national happiness over national income since the early 1970s and famously adopted the goal of Gross National Happiness over Gross National Product.
  • The theme for International Day of Happiness 2025 is 'Caring and Sharing.'

World Oral Health Day

  • World Oral Health Day is observed every year on March 20. It is a global initiative organised by the FDI World Dental Federation to raise awareness about oral health and encourage good oral hygiene practices.
  • The day was first established by the World Dental Federation (FDI) in 2007. It was originally observed on September 12 to honour the birth anniversary of Dr. Charles Godon, the founder of FDI, it was later shifted to March 20 in 2013 to reflect the significance of oral health for everyone.

World Sparrow Day

  • World Sparrow Day is celebrated every year on March 20th to raise awareness about the declining population of house sparrows and encourage conservation efforts. The event was first initiated in 2010 by Nature Forever Society, an Indian bird conservation organisation. Over the years, it has gained global recognition, with more than 50 countries participating in various conservation initiatives.
  • The theme for World Sparrow Day 2025 is "I Love Sparrows". Urbanisation, pollution, and habitat loss threaten these birds. Initiatives like Save the Sparrow and Early Bird aim to restore their numbers.

Ordnance Factory Day

  • Ordnance Factory Day is celebrated on 18th March every year in India as a mark of establishing the first Ordnance Factory in India in 1801 in Cossipore, Kolkata. The day commemorates the efforts and contributions of the Ordnance Factories in India that strengthens the defense capabilities in India. The factories manufacture a wide range of defense equipment, tanks, small arms and play an important role in success of India's defense operations. 
  • Celebrated on 18th March every year, Ordnance Factories Day celebrates the establishment of the first Ordnance Factory in the country. The Ordnance Factory Board established in 1979, manages the defense production in India. In 1775, the Gunpowder Factory was set up in Ishapore near Kolkata by the British East Company that catered to the needs of the British Indian Army. This year marked the beginning of indigenous production of arms and ammunition in India.

National Vaccination Day

  • National Vaccination Day 2025 is celebrated in India on March 16 to spread awareness about the importance of vaccines in preventing diseases and managing public health. The day focuses on the eradication of vaccine-preventable illness and committing to improving the healthcare system of India and appreciating the contributions made by healthcare professionals in providing widespread immunisation.
  • National Vaccination Day was celebrated for the first time on March 16, 1995. The first dose of oral polio vaccine was administered for the first time on this day under the Pulse Polio Immunization Programme. The aim was to eradicate polio from the country and eventually declare India to be a polio-free country by the World Health Organisation by 2014.

Digital Payments Awareness Week 2025

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) marked a milestone this year (2025) with the fifth edition of the Digital Payments Awareness Week, from March 10 to 16, which aimed to promote and accelerate the adoption of safe and secure digital payment methods.
  • The theme for Digital Payments Awareness Week 2025 is 'India Pays Digitally.'
