Former SC Judge Dinesh Maheshwari Takes Charge as Law Commission of India's Chairperson

  • Justice (Retired) Dinesh Maheshwari, former Judge of the Supreme Court, was appointed as the Chairperson of the 23rd Law Commission of India.
  • Advocate Hitesh Jain and Professor D. P. Verma (Law Faculty, BHU) are the other members of the Commission. Their tenure will last till 30.08.2027.
  • The 22nd Law Commission was headed by Justice (Retd) Ritu Raj Awasthi, former Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court and had former Kerala High Court judge Justice K. T. Sankaran,Prof. Anand Paliwal, Prof. D. P. Verma, Prof.(Dr) Raka Arya and M. Karunanithi as members of the Commission.

Kerala Becomes First in India to Launch Online Permanent Lok Adalat Services

  • Kerala became the first state in India to introduce online filing and hearing facilities for Permanent Lok Adalats.
  • This initiative of the Kerala State Legal Services Authority (KELSA) seeks to improve the accessibility of justice, especially for marginalised communities.
  • The online filing system was officially inaugurated by the Kerala High Court Chief Justice Nitin M. Jamdar at a function organised by KELSA.
  • This digital transition for Lok Adalats aligns with the Kerala judiciary's broader vision of ensuring accessible and affordable justice for every citizen, by leveraging technology.
  • Kerala currently hosts three Permanent Lok Adalats- one each in Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, and Kozhikode.

Justice Arun Palli New Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court

  • The Central government cleared the appointment of Justice Arun Palli of Punjab and Haryana High Court as the new Chief Justice of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court.
  • Justice Palli graduated in Commerce and completed his law degree from Panjab University, Chandigarh, in 1988.
  • He then commenced his legal practice at the Punjab and Haryana High Court was appointed Additional Advocate General for Punjab on September 1, 2004, a position he held until March 2007.
  • He was designated as a Senior Advocate on April 26, 2007. He also appeared before the Supreme Court, Delhi High Court and also argued several important matters in the Himachal Pradesh High Court.

  • The Central government issued a notification for appointment of Justice Sanjeev Kumar as the acting Chief Justice of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court.
  • J&K and Ladakh High Court's present Chief Justice, Justice Tashi Rabistan, retired.

SC Collegium Recommends Appointment of Justice Arun Palli as Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir H...

  • The Supreme Court Collegium recommended that Justice Arun Palli of Punjab and Haryana High Court be appointed as the Chief Justice of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court.
  • The decision came in view of current Chief Justice Tashi Rabtan's retirement on April 9.
  • Justice Palli served as the Additional Advocate General of Punjab from September 2004 to March 2007. Following this, he was designated a senior advocate in April 2007.
  • He was elevated to be a part of the Punjab and Haryana HC bench in December 2013.
  • Justice Palli has been serving as the Executive Chairman of the Haryana State Legal Service Authority since May 31, 2023. He was also nominated as a member of the National Legal Services Authority on October 31, 2023, for a period of two years.

Centre Clears Transfer of Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma from Delhi to Calcutta High Court

  • The Central government approved the transfer of Delhi High Court Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma to the Calcutta High Court.
  • Justice Sharma joined the Delhi Judicial Service in 1992 and was promoted to the Higher Judicial Service in 2003. He has held key positions, including Registrar General of the Delhi High Court and Principal District & Sessions Judge, New Delhi.
  • A Fellow of the Commonwealth Judicial Education Institute, he has also trained mediators under the Supreme Court's Mediation Project.
