DAYS AND EVENTS - October 2024

Oct 2024

Oct 01, 2024

International Coffee Day

  • International Coffee Day is celebrated annually on October 1. It is the day coffee lovers worldwide celebrate the beloved caffeine-rich beverage.
  • International Coffee Day was established by the International Coffee Organization (ICO) and first celebrated on October 1, 2015, to recognise and promote the global coffee industry. This observance aims to highlight the economic, social, and cultural significance of coffee, as well as raise awareness about sustainable coffee practices, fair trade, and the challenges faced by coffee producers worldwide. Since its inception, International Coffee Day has become a global phenomenon, uniting coffee lovers and industry stakeholders to celebrate their shared passion for this beloved beverage and advocate for the well-being of coffee growers and the environment.
  • Every year this day has a special theme and purpose and 2024's theme is 'Coffee, Your Daily Ritual, Our Shared Journey'. It emphasises sustainable and ethical coffee practices and the fact that we should care about the coffee farmers as much as they care about the coffee plantations.

International Day of Older People

  • Seniors are the backbone of our society, shouldering countless responsibilities while passing down invaluable wisdom and rich traditions to the younger generation. To honour their vital role, we celebrate the International Day of Older Persons on October 1 each year, a day dedicated to recognising the contributions of older citizens.
  • On December 14, 1990, the United Nations General Assembly designated October 1 as the International Day of Older Persons through Resolution 45/106. This resolution acknowledged the importance of addressing the concerns and needs of elderly people and promoting their well-being. This initiative was led by the Vienna International Plan of Action on Ageing, adopted by the World Assembly on Ageing in 1982 and later sanctioned by the UN General Assembly.
  • The first International Day of Older Persons was observed on October 1, 1991. This date was chosen to coincide with the United Nations Principles for Older Persons, which were adopted by the General Assembly to address the rights and well-being of older individuals.
  • The theme for the International Day of Older Persons 2024 is 'Ageing with Dignity: The Importance of Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons Worldwide'.
