ADB Approves $162 Million Loan to Boost Sustainable Tourism Development
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) approved a $162 million loan aimed at enhancing tourism development projects in Himachal Pradesh.
As per Vivek Vishal, ADB's Senior Project Officer, the initiative will bolster the state's tourism potential by upgrading and preserving cultural and heritage sites, and build new facilities to strengthening the tourism sector.
The Sustainable and Inclusive Tourism Development Project in Himachal Pradesh is designed to promote heritage and cultural centres in the Mandi and Hamirpur districts. It will also involve restoring the historic Naggar Castle in Kullu, beautifying public spaces, and constructing a convention centre along with other amenities in Kangra. Additionally, there will be improvements in wayside facilities across Kullu, Hamirpur, and Kangra.
Furthermore, ADB will assist in strengthening the institutional capacity of the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Board to formulate a comprehensive tourism strategy and marketing plan.

Launch of 'Cruise Bharat Mission' to Boost Cruise Tourism in India
Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, launched the 'Cruise Bharat Mission' from Mumbai port. The mission aims to enhance India's potential as a global hub for cruise tourism, targeting a doubling of cruise passenger traffic by 2029. It focuses on three key cruise segments: ocean and harbour, river, inland, and island. This initiative is expected to significantly revamp the cruise sector in India and promote the country as a leading global cruise destination.
The Cruise Bharat Mission is being executed in three phases:
Phase 1 (October 1, 2024 – September 30, 2025): This phase focuses on conducting studies, master planning, and forming cruise alliances with neighbouring countries. It will also involve modernising existing cruise terminals, marinas, and destinations to enhance cruise circuits.
Phase 2 (October 1, 2025 – March 31, 2027): This phase will concentrate on developing new cruise terminals, marinas, and destinations to activate high-potential cruise locations and circuits.
Phase 3 (April 1, 2027 – March 31, 2029): This final phase will focus on integrating all cruise circuits across the Indian Subcontinent, ensuring the maturity of the cruise ecosystem while continuing infrastructure development.

Adventure Tourism Meet 2024 to Kick Off in Shillong on October 4
Shillong in Meghalaya will host the Adventure Tourism Meet (ATM) 2024 on October 4, organised by Indian Express Online in collaboration with Meghalaya Tourism.
This daylong event, which will take place at the State Convention Centre, aims to bring together tourism leaders, adventure enthusiasts, and industry stakeholders to discuss the potential of adventure tourism in India, particularly in Meghalaya.
The meet will feature prominent speakers, including Meghalaya Minister of Tourism Bah Paul Lyngdoh, Odisha Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida, and Meghalaya Commissioner and Secretary (tourism) Vijay Kumar D.
The panellists will discuss the role of adventure tourism as a driver of economic growth, particularly in rural and lesser-known regions. Experts will deliberate over the strategic involvement of state governments in developing essential infrastructure and policies to foster this sector.
