Satish Kumar Assumes Additional Charge as Chairman of Indian Oil Corporation.

  • A day after Shrikant Madhav Vaidya stepped down as Chairman of Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL), the Indian government appointed Satish Kumar Vaduguri to assume additional charge of the top position at the state-owned crude oil refining and marketing company. Vaduguri's appointment as Chairman of IOCL is temporary, as the search for a full-time Chairman is still underway. The notification regarding the change in the IOCL directorate does not specify a timeline for the appointment. Therefore, Vaduguri will serve as Chairman with additional charge until the position is permanently filled. However, the Ministry of Oil and Natural Gas, Government of India, is confident that a new full-time Chairman will be appointed shortly.
  • Vaduguri assumed the role of Chairman of IOCL on September 1, 2024, following Vaidya's retirement on August 31, 2024. Vaidya, who took charge as IOCL Chairman in July 2020 for a three-year term, served a one-year extension after his initial retirement in August 2023. Vaduguri additional charge as Chairman comes while he continues in his role as Director (Marketing) of the company, a position he has held since October 2021.

Writer and Social Activist K. J. Baby Passes Away

  • Writer and social activist K.J Baby, who worked for the upliftment of tribals in Wayanad, died. He was 70.
  • His body was found near his residence at Nadavayal village in the district.
  • Baby has been better known for an unconventional school 'Kanav', which he had established in 1991 for tribal students. He had also carved a niche for himself as a writer, dramatist and filmmaker.
  • Baby has been known as one of the few Malayalam writers who had made the voice of the marginalised tribals heard. His writings were considered a mirror of the brutality the community had faced through generations.
  • His major literary contributions include ' Nadugadhika', 'Mavelimantram', ' Bespurkkana', and 'Goodbye Malabar'. Mavelimantram, which bagged the Kerala Sahitya Akademi award in 1994, is reckoned as a milestone in Malayalam Dalit literature.
  • In 2021, he won the first Bharat Bhavan Award for Best Rural Drama for his play ' Nadugadhika'.

New Zealand's Maori King Dies after 18-Year Reign

  • New Zealand's Maori King, Kiingi Tuheitia Pootatau Te Wherowhero VII, passed away at the age of 69, just days after celebrating 18 years on the throne. He was the seventh monarch of the Kiingitanga movement, established in 1858 to unify Maori tribes against British colonisation. Tuheitia died following heart surgery.
  • A symbol of Maori identity and kinship, Tuheitia occupied a largely ceremonial role and for most of his reign only spoke publicly once a year.

Five-Year-Old Teghbir Singh Conquers Mount Kilimanjaro

  • Teghbir Singh, a five-year-old boy from Ropar, Punjab, etched his name in the annals of mountaineering history. Teghbir became the youngest Asian to successfully scale Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak, standing at an impressive 5,895 meters above sea level.
  • Teghbir's extraordinary journey began on August 18, when he set out to tackle the formidable mountain located in Tanzania. The young climber, accompanied by a dedicated support team, embarked on this challenging expedition with a spirit of adventure that belied his tender age.
  • After five days of gruelling ascent, Teghbir reached the mountain's highest point, Uhuru Peak, on August 23.

K. L. Rahul Invests in Lifestyle Brand 'Metaman' for New Premium Perfume Range

  • Indian cricketer K. L. Rahul joined the men's lifestyle brand Metaman as a brand ambassador and increased his investment in the company for a new range of premium perfumes.
  • While the financial details of the investment remain undisclosed, the capital raised by the firm will be used for the launch and marketing of the fragrance range, set to hit the market on August 30.
