Supreme Court Allows Appointment of Retired Judges to High Courts On Ad-hoc Basis

  • The Supreme Court ordered that the High Courts can recommend appointment of retired judges on ad-hoc basis to tackle pendency and clear the backlog of pending criminal appeals.
  • These ad-hoc judges would sit with regular judges in Division Benches.
  • A Special Bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna and Justices B. R. Gavai and Surya Kant added that each High Court can appoint two to five judges and in any case, the number should not exceed 10 percent of sanctioned strength.

Centre Notifies Appointment of 5 Judges to High Courts Of Rajasthan, Allahabad And Bombay

  • The Central Government has notified the appointment of 5 judges to Rajasthan High Court, Allahabad High Court and Bombay High Court.
  • Three judicial officers, Chandra Shekhar Sharma, Pramil Kumar Mathur and Chandra Prakash Shrimali were appointed as judges of Rajasthan High Court.
  • Advocate Praveen Kumar Giri was elevated as the judge of Allahabad High Court and Advocate Pravin Sheshrao Patil has been appointed as the Additional Judge to the Bombay High Court.

Supreme Court Confers Senior Designations on 4 Former High Court Chief Justice/Judges

  • Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and the other judges of the Supreme Court including members of the Collegium comprising Justices B.R. Gavai, Surya Kant, Hrishikesh Roy and Abhay S. Oka designated the following former Chief Justice/Judges of the High Courts as Senior Advocates with effect from January 22:
  • Arvind Singh Sangwan, former Judge of the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad
  • C.V. Nagarjuna Reddy, former Judge of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana
  • Goutam Bhaduri, former Judge, High Court of Chhattisgarh
  • S. Vaidyanathan, former Chief Justice, High Court of Meghalaya

CJ Ramesh Sinha Inaugurates Workshop to Enhance Technical Skills of Chhattisgarh HC Staff, Assist...

  • In a landmark step towards empowering the judiciary of Chhattisgarh with cutting-edge technology, the Chhattisgarh High Court held a workshop titled "A deep dive into the controls within New CIS Version 4.0 and Equipping the Technical Staff with Laptops" at the Chhattisgarh State Judicial Academy, Bilaspur for Technical Staff of the High Court and Assistant Programmers from all 23 Districts of Chhattisgarh to enhance their technical skills and CIS 4.0 version training, and they were provided with high-capacity laptops.
  • On this occasion, under the leadership of the HC Chief Justice Ramesh Sinha, the Technical Staff of the High Court and Assistant Programmers from all Districts of Chhattisgarh, a total of 34 Technical Staff were provided with modern technology-equipped laptops.

Retired Supreme Court Justice Arun Mishra Appointed BCCI Ombudsman

  • Justice Arun Mishra, a former Supreme Court judge, was appointed as the Ombudsman and Ethics Officer of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The announcement was made and marking another significant milestone in his illustrious career. Justice Mishra's extensive legal expertise and leadership experience make him well-suited for the dual responsibilities of ensuring ethical practices and addressing disputes within the BCCI. 

Justice Arindam Sinha Appointed as Acting Chief Justice of Orissa High Court

  • The Centre notified the appointment of Justice Arindam Sinha, the senior-most Judge of Orissa High Court as its Acting Chief Justice. The move cames as the present Chief Justice Chakradhari Sharan Singh retired on January 19, 2025.
  • He was enrolled as an Advocate in March 1991 and practised for 22 years mostly before the Calcutta High Court. He predominantly practised Civil, Commercial, Arbitration and Constitutional laws and specialised in Civil laws.
  • He was elevated to the Calcutta High Court as an Additional Judge in October 2013 and was appointed as a permanent Judge in March 2016. Subsequently, he was transferred and took oath as Judge of the Orissa High Court in October 2021.
