Brigadier Raj Manchanda Passes Away

The Indian squash community mourned the loss of Brigadier Raj Manchanda, a legendary figure affectionately known as the 'Old Fox,' passed away at the age of 80. Manchanda has left behind an inspiring legacy marked by unparalleled achievements, resilience, and contributions to the sport.
Brigadier Raj Manchanda's journey in squash is nothing short of extraordinary. Despite starting the sport in his 30s, Manchanda rose to dominate the national squash circuit. He achieved the distinction of being a six-time National Champion, winning consecutive titles between 1977 and 1982. His dedication and resilience on the court earned him the prestigious Arjuna Award, solidifying his place as a legend in Indian squash.
On the international stage, one of his most notable achievements was securing fourth place at the 1984 Asian Championships held in Jordan.

Former CBI Director Vijay Shankar Passes Away

Former CBI director Vijay Shankar passed away. He was 76.
A 1969-batch IPS officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, Shankar headed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) from December 12, 2005 to July 31, 2008.
During his tenure as CBI director, the agency took over the infamous Aarushi-Hemraj double murder case.
As additional director of CBI, he supervised the extradition of gangster Abu Salem and actor Monika Bedi from Portugal. He also supervised the investigation into the Telgi scam.
Before being appointed CBI director, Shankar headed National Disaster Response Force, and Civil Defence and Home Guards.
He served as inspector general in the BSF and was posted in Jammu and Kashmir at the peak of militancy in the 1990s.
He is a recipient of the coveted President's police medals for distinguished and meritorious service.

Professor Amiya Kumar Bagchi, recipient of the Padma Shri, who passed away was one of the most outstanding economists, scholars, and public intellectuals of our time.
Renowned for his revolutionary contributions to economic history and his commitment to Left politics, Bagchi's scholarship bridged economic theory and historical data, influencing both economists and historians alike. His work continues to shed light on India's colonial economic history, development, and underdevelopment, providing profound insights into the impact of imperialism.
Bagchi a beloved teacher and mentor guided numerous students, many of whom went on to become prominent scholars in their own right.
He played a pivotal role in the academic landscape, combining economics with historical analysis to challenge colonial narratives.

World's Oldest Man, John Alfred Tinniswood, Passes Away

The world's oldest living man John Alfred Tinniswood died at the age of 112.
The lifelong Liverpool football fan became the world's oldest living man in April 2024, when Juan Vicente Pérez Mora died at the age of 114.
Tinniswood, who was born on August 26, 1912, the same year the Titanic sank, became the UK's oldest man in 2020.
He was recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as the world's oldest man in April 2024.

Essar Group Co-founder Shashi Ruia Passes Away

Essar Group co-founder Shashi Ruia died at the age of 80.
Shashi, a first-generation entrepreneur industrialist, started his career in 1965 under the guidance of his father Nand Kishore Ruia.
He, along with his brother Ravi, laid the foundation of Essar in 1969 by constructing an outer breakwater at Chennai Port. The group expanded into various sectors, including steel, oil refining, exploration and production, telecom, power, and construction.
