Need to Teach Law in Regional Languages: CJI

  • Emphasising the need to make law and legal education accessible to millions of Indian citizens, Chief Justice of India D. Y. Chandrachud said that universities should come together to prepare teaching modules in regional languages.
  • Addressing the 3rd Convocation at Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia National Law University (RMLNLU), Lucknow, the CJI said that a survey of 81 universities and colleges conducted by the Research Department of the Supreme Court found that the common people faced difficulties in understanding various schemes relating to their rights due to their inability to understand English.

Justice Aalia Neelum Sworn in as First Woman Chief Justice of Lahore High Court

  • Justice Aalia Neelum took oath as the Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court (LHC) of Pakistan, making her the first woman to be elevated as the court's top judge.
  • Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider Khan administered the oath of office to her.
  • Punjab province's first woman Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz was also present at the oath-taking ceremony.
  • Justice Neelum stood third in the seniority list of judges of the LHC but the Judicial Commission of Pakistan headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa had decided to consider her nomination for the office of the LHC chief justice.

SC Appoints Former CJI Lalit as Head of Search Panels for V-Cs in West Bengal

  • With the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government and the West Bengal Governor at loggerheads over the appointment of Vice-Chancellors for state-run universities, the Supreme Court appointed former CJI U. U. Lalit as the chairperson of the search-cum-selection committees for shortlisting names for appointment.
  • A bench of Justices Surya Kant and K. V. Viswanathan authorised the Chairman to constitute separate or joint Search-cum-Selection Committees for one or more Universities, keeping in view the nature of subjects/disciplines in which education is being imparted in such pooled Universities.

Justice Sheel Nagu New Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court

  • The Central government notified the appointment of Madhya Pradesh High Court judge Justice Sheel Nagu as the Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court.
  • The development came more than six months after the Supreme Court Collegium recommended Justice Nagu's appointment as the Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court.
  • Justice Nagu was serving as the Acting Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court after Chief Justice Ravi Malimath demitted the office on May 24, 2024.

Justice Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi New Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court

  • Justice Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court.
  • His name was recommended by the Supreme Court collegium in December 2023.
  • Justice Sarangi enrolled as a lawyer in 1985 and practiced before the Orissa High Court as well as the Supreme Court. He was appointed as a judge of the Orissa High Court in June 2013.
  • The Jharkhand High Court is one of the newest high courts in India. It was established in 2000. The court has jurisdiction over Jharkhand state. The seat of the court is at Ranchi, the administrative capital of the state. The court has a sanctioned judge strength of 25.
