International Military Law Journal Launched: Indian Lawyers, Former Judge part of Editorial Body

Three Indian lawyers and a former High Court judge are among those tasked with the editorial oversight of the newly launched 'Forces Law Review' (FLR) - the first ever international journal on military law.
The journal is a joint initiative by the National Institute of Military Justice (NIMJ) in Washington DC, USA and the Centre for Constitution and Public Policy (CCPP), University Institute of Legal Studies, Panjab University in Chandigarh.
Advocate Navdeep Singh is one of three Chief Editors nominated to review journal content.
The other Chief Editors (Honorary) nominated by NIJM and CCPP are:
Professor Franklin Rosenblatt of the Mississippi College School of Law, USA, who serves as the current President of NIMJ; Judge of the National Guard Court of Appeals and is also a former Judge Advocate General (JAG) officer of the US Army; and
Professor and author Shruti Bedi who is the Director of CCPP and also serves as the current Director of the University Institute of Legal Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh.
Apart from the Chief Editors, there is also an Editorial Advisory Board (Honorary).
The members of this body include Justice Rajiv Narain Raina (former judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court), Additional Solicitor General of India Aishwarya Bhati and Senior Advocate Sanjeev Sharma.

Supreme Court Designates Eight Retired High Court Judges as Senior Advocates

The Supreme Court of India has designated eight retired High Court judges, including a former Acting Chief Justice, as Senior Advocates.
The following former judges wer conferred the senior gown: Justice AM Babu, former judge, High Court of Kerala, Justice Gudiseva Shyam Prasad, former judge, High Court for the States of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, Justice M. Venugopal, former judge, Madras High Court, Justice Mungeshwar Sahoo, former judge, Patna High Court, Justice Prakash Naik, former judge, Bombay High Court, Justice Shashikant Gupta, former judge, Allahabad High Court, Justice T. Raja, former Acting Chief Justice, Madras High Court and Justice Vivek Puri, former judge, High Court of Punjab and Haryana.
The Supreme Court's Committee for the designation of Senior Advocates took the decision after a full court meeting.

Med-Arb Centre Launched at Gujarat High Court Arbitration Centre (18)

An a significant move, a Med-Arb (Mediation-Arbitration) Centre was launched at the Gujarat High Court Arbitration Centre in the High Court campus.
On August 15, after the customary Independence Day flag-hoisting ceremony, Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal of the Gujarat High Court inaugurated the Med-Arb Centre in the presence of High Court Justices, specially trained mediators and other legal luminaries.
Med-Arb is a form of alternative dispute resolution that involves the integration of mediation in matters referred for arbitration.
In May this year (2024), the Gujarat State Legal Services Authority (GSLSA) had organized an orientation and training program whereby eleven advocates, who exclusively deal with commercial cases or arbitration matters were trained by expert mediators.

Justice B. R. Gavai Inaugurates Country's First Digital Court for NI Act Cases in Kerala

Supreme Court judge Justice B. R. Gavai inaugurated various digital initiatives at the Kerala High Court.
Justice Gavai inaugurated the country's first exclusive Digital Court for Negotiable Instruments Act Cases in Kollam. Other digital initiatives of the Kerala High Court were: Online Dispute Resolution System, Model Digital Court Room concept, Learning Management System of the Judicial Academy, Digital Library and Research Centre, restoration project of Ram Mohan Palace and the announcement of Digital District Courts.
The Digital Court for Negotiable Instrument Act Cases is an initiative to reduce the pendency of cases under Section 138 of the NI Act of cheque dishonour cases. The idea is to launch '24*7 ON Courts' (Open and Networked) that enable integration, participation and collaboration. This would enable the transferring of requisite documents by the litigants to other agencies. It would enable litigants to track the progress of their cases and thus integrate the whole process.

Justice H. S. Thangkhiew Appointed Acting Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court

The Central Government notified the appointment of Justice Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew as acting Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court.
Justice Thangkhiew took over as Acting Chief Justice pursuant to the retirement of Chief Justice S. Vaidyanathan on August 16.
In July, the Supreme Court Collegium had recommended the name of Justice Tashi Rabstan as the Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court.
