Gingee Fort Named UNESCO World Heritage Site

Gingee Fort in Tamil Nadu, was officially declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site during the 47th session of the World Heritage Committee in Paris. The fort is part of the Maratha Military Landscapes, a group of 12 forts now recognised globally for their cultural and historical value.
Gingee Fort, also called the 'Troy of the East', is one of the oldest and most unique forts in South India. It was the only site from Tamil Nadu in the running for the UNESCO World Heritage tag this year (2025).

Three African Sites Removed from the UNESCO World Heritage 'in Danger' List

The World Heritage Committee removed three African heritage sites -- in Madagascar, Egypt and Libya -- from UNESCO's list of endangered sites, acknowledging successful efforts to mitigate threats and restore their cultural and ecological integrity.
The decision was taken during the 47^th session of the World Heritage Committee (WHC) in Paris.
The sites taken off the danger list are the Rainforests of the Atsinanana in Madagascar, Abu Mena in Egypt, and the Old Town of Ghadams in Libya.

Salkhan Fossils Park, located in Sonbhadra district of Uttar Pradesh, was included in UNESCO's Tentative List of World Heritage Sites. This recognition underscores the park's geological and ecological significance, with its 1.4-billion-year-old fossils, and represents a major boost for eco-tourism and scientific research in the region. The state government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has been actively working towards promoting such natural heritage sites globally.

Eight Hundred-Year-Old Pandya Era Shiva Temple Unearthed in Tamil Nadu

An important archaeological discovery was made in Udampatti village of Melur taluk, Tamil Nadu, where the foundation of an 800-year-old Shiva temple belonging to the later Pandya period was unearthed. Although only the stone base remains, the site is of major historical interest due to Tamil inscriptions dating back to 1217-1218 CE that reveal the temple's name—Thennavanisvaram—and its financially independent status. This find sheds light on the cultural, architectural, and socio-economic dynamics of the Pandya era.
The discovery also reveals that the current village was once known as Attur, providing critical historical and linguistic data for researchers.
