World Coconut Day

  • World Coconut Day, first celebrated in 2009, was established by the Asian and Pacific Coconut Community (APCC), an intergovernmental organisation under the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific.
  • The APCC, representing 19 coconut-producing countries in the Asia-Pacific region, chose September 2 for this annual observance to commemorate the organisation's founding in 1969. Each year, the International Coconut Community sets a theme for the day which aims at highlighting the importance and health benefits related to coconuts.
  • The theme for this year's (2024) World Coconut Day is 'Coconut for a Circular Economy: Building Partnership for Maximum Value', which focuses on promoting sustainability and partnerships in the coconut industry.

National Nutrition Week

  • National Nutrition Week in India is observed from September 1 to 7 every year. This week provides a platform for various health-related activities and campaigns aimed at improving the nutritional status of the population.   • The theme for National Nutrition Week 2024 is 'Nutritious Diets for Everyone'.

Telugu Language Day

  • Telugu Language Day, celebrated annually on August 29, honours the rich heritage and cultural significance of the Telugu language, one of the classical languages of India. The day is also a tribute to the life and work of one of the most revered figures in Telugu literature, Gidugu Venkata Ramamurthy. A pioneer of the language reform movement, Ramamurthy's contributions have left an indelible mark on the Telugu literary world.
  • The Telugu Language Day is celebrated every year on August 29 coinciding with the birth anniversaries of the Telugu poet Gidugu Venkata Ramamurthy. The Andhra Pradesh government declared August 29 as Telugu Language Day in 1966.

National Sports Day

  • India celebrates National Sports Day every year on August 29, which is a special occasion dedicated to marking the spirit of sports in India. Apart from India's achievements in sports, this day emphasises the importance of sports to keep us healthy and active.
  • The Indian government officially announced to celebrate National Sports Day in 2012 marking August 29 as a day to recognise sports excellence. The date was selected to pay tribute to Major Dhyan Chand, also known as the 'Wizard of Hockey'. Major Dhyan Chand was born on August 29, 1905, in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. His career spanned from 1926 to 1948, when he played 185 matches for India scoring over 400 goals. His excellent performance brought the golden period for Indian hockey as he led India to win three gold medals in 1928, 1932 and 1936.

International Day Against Nuclear Tests

  • Every year on August 29, the world observes the International Day Against Nuclear Tests. This significant day serves as a global reminder of the devastating effects of nuclear weapons testing and the urgent need for a world free from the threat of nuclear destruction. Since the dawn of the nuclear age in 1945, over 2,000 nuclear tests have been conducted, leaving a legacy of environmental damage and human suffering.
