Oxford Bookstores Honours Excellence in Book Design and Visual Arts

  • Oxford Bookstores announced Bhavi Mehta as the winner of the 9th edition of the Oxford Bookstore Book Cover Prize. Mehta's winning entry was the book jacket for "The Book Beautiful" published by Hachette India and authored by Pradeep Sebastian.
  • In addition to the Book Cover Prize, the evening also witnessed the announcement of the longlist for the second Oxford Bookstore Art Book Prize. This prestigious prize, instituted in collaboration with Visual Arts Gallery in 2022, recognizes the value of art in all genres under the umbrella of an art publication.
  • The 13 longlisted titles were recognized for their quality of artistic composition and overall design by a dedicated jury panel, which includes esteemed members such as Dr. Alka Pande, H.E. Ms. May-Elin Stener, Ms. Priti Paul, Mr. Anjani Kumar Singh, and Ms. Sunaina Anand.
  • The Oxford Bookstore Book Cover Prize and Art Book Prize serve as platforms to honour and promote artistic excellence in the realms of book design and visual arts. By recognizing and celebrating the outstanding work of designers, artists, and publishers, these initiatives aim to foster creativity, innovation, and appreciation for the intrinsic value of visual narratives.

2024 Pulitzer Prize Winners Announced

  • The prestigious Pulitzer Prizes for 2024 were announced on May 7, 2024, by Columbia University in the United States of America. The awards, considered the most prestigious in the fields of journalism and arts, were conferred by Columbia University on the recommendation of the Pulitzer Prize Board. The winners will be formally recognized at a ceremony later, presided over by the president of Columbia University.

The Hindu Triumphs at 6th International Newspaper Design Competition

  • The Hindu secured three prestigious awards at the 6th International Newspaper Design Competition organized by newspaperdesign.in. The accolades were garnered for their exceptional explainer page titled "The science behind Neeraj's skills," shedding light on Neeraj Chopra's remarkable journey and success in athletics. The Hindu clinched the highest honor, the 'Best of Show' award, recognizing its outstanding contribution to newspaper design excellence. The publication's insightful portrayal of Neeraj Chopra's craft earned them the 'Gold' award in the 'Best of Sports Page' category, highlighting their prowess in sports journalism and design. UNESCO Guillermo Cano Prize 2024 Awarded to Palestine Journalists in Gaza (05)

  • In a gesture of solidarity and recognition, Palestinian journalists covering the crisis in Gaza were named laureates of the 2024 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize. The announcement came from the recommendation of an International Jury of media professionals, emphasising the courage and commitment of these journalists amidst challenging circumstances.
  • Mauricio Weibel, Chair of the International Jury, highlighted the immense debt owed to these journalists for their courage and dedication to freedom of expression.
  • Established in 1997, the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize recognizes individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the defense and promotion of press freedom, especially in the face of danger. Named after Colombian journalist Guillermo Cano Isaza, the prize honors his legacy and is funded by various foundations and organizations committed to press freedom.

Biden to Honour Olympian Katie Ledecky, Actor Michelle Yeoh with Medal of Freedom

  • A winner of seven Olympic gold medals, a leader of the Mississippi civil rights struggle and a pioneer of television's tabloid talk show genre were part of this year's (2024) class of Presidential Medal of Freedom recipients.
  • U.S. President Joe Biden extended the highest U.S. civilian award to 19 people, including Team USA swimmer Katie Ledecky, the assassinated civil rights leader Medgar Evers and television host Phil Donahue.
  • The honorees list played special homage to "firsts" in their field, including the "Everything Everywhere All at Once" actress Michelle Yeoh, who was the first Asian to win the Academy Award for Best Actress; Ellen Ochoa, the first Hispanic woman in space; and Jim Thorpe, the versatile athlete who became the first Native American to win an Olympic gold medal in 1912.

Dr. Bina Modi Honoured for Outstanding Contribution to Corporate Social Responsibility

  • Dr. Bina Modi, Chairperson and Managing Director of Modi Enterprises – K. K. Purnima Devi Barman Receives 'Green Oscar' Whitley Gold Award 2024

  • A wildlife biologist from Assam was honoured with a leading UK wildlife charity award for her conservation efforts of the endangered Greater Adjutant Stork (Hargila).
  • Dr. Purnima Devi Barman won the GBP 1,00,000 Whitley Gold Award from the Whitley Fund for Nature.
  • Hargila had seen its population to an estimated 450 birds in Northeast India, but due to her efforts, it has now 1800.
