Tamil Writer Sivashankari Selected for Dr. C. Narayana Reddy National Literary Award

  • Noted Tamil writer Sivashankari, who has created a wealth of literature in Tamil, was selected for the Dr. C. Narayana Reddy National Literary Award.
  • Ms. Sivashankari is a recipient of the Saraswati Samman Award also.
  • The Chennai-based writer has penned 36 novels, 48 mini-novels (navalikas), 150 stories, 15 travelogues, seven volumes of essays, four research papers and two biographies in Tamil.

President Awards 6 CRPF Personnel, Including 4 Posthumously, for Gallantry

  • Six Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel, including four posthumously, were decorated with military gallantry medals by President Droupadi Murmu during a defence investiture ceremony.
  • The family members of Inspector Dilip Kumar Das, Head Constable Raj Kumar Yadav and Constables Bablu Rabha and Shambhu Roy received Kirti Chakras (posthumous) from Ms. Murmu. They were recognised for displaying gallant action during an anti-Naxal operation in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district on April 3, 2021.
  • Assistant Commandant Bibhor Kumar Singh was awarded the Shaurya Chakra for displaying "exceptional" bravery and continuing to lead his troops despite losing his left leg to an improvised explosive device (IED) blast triggered by the Naxals in the Chakrabandha forest of the Aurangabad district in Bihar on February 25, 2022.
  • Constable Gamit Mukesh Kumar was also awarded the Shaurya Chakra for killing a terrorist in hand-to-hand combat and subsequent exchange of gunfire during a counter-terrorist operation in Jammu and Kashmir's Srinagar on December 19, 2021.

Foxconn Chairman Young Liu Receives Padma Bhushan

  • Foxconn Chairman Young Liu is set to visit India later this year after being awarded the Padma Bhushan, the country's third highest civilian award. The honour was presented to him by Manharsinh Yadav, the Director General of the India Taipei Association, in Taipei.
  • Young Liu is a seasoned entrepreneur with a career spanning over four decades.

  • Sopna Kallingal of Kallingal Plantation, Thrissur, Kerala received Spice Award 2024, instituted by ICAR-Indian Institute of Spices Research. The award was given to her for her initiatives in enterprise diversification and integrated crop management strategies, promoting a sustainable spice-based cropping system.
  • She received the award at a function held in Kozhikode Under the leadership of Ms. Kallingal, Kallingal plantation has a diverse range of crops, embodying a dedication to enterprise diversification and agriculture innovation, according to the award citation.

Dan David Prize Names 9 Historians as Winners of Prestigious Award

  • The Dan David Prize named nine historians as the 2024 winners of the prestigious award, with each of them receiving $300,000 to advance their research.
  • The winners' areas of study are vast, from the birth of democracy in India, to the underground archive that Jews kept in the Warsaw Ghetto during World War II and the bones of Vikings found in Britain.
  • The Dan David Prize board said that it recognized work that 'illuminates the past in bold and creative ways.' An awards ceremony took place in Italy.
  • The winners for 2024 are: Keisha N. Blain, Benjamin Brose, Cécile Fromont, Cat Jarman, Daniel Jütte, Stuart M. McManus, Kathryn Olivarius, Katarzyna Person and Tripurdaman Sing.
  • The Dan David Prize is an international group of awards that recognise and support outstanding contributions to the study of history and other disciplines that shed light on the human past. Nine prizes of $300,000 are awarded each year to outstanding early- and mid-career scholars and practitioners in the historical disciplines.

Sanjana Thakur Wins 2024 Commonwealth Short Story Prize

  • Sanjana Thakur, writer from Mumbai, beat competition from over 7,359 entrants worldwide and was named the winner of the GBP 5,000 Commonwealth Short Story Prize 2024 in London. Sanjana's story entitled Aishwarya Rai takes its name from the famed Bollywood actress to reimagine and reverse the traditional adoption story.
  • Her story revolves around a young woman, Avni, who chooses between possible mothers housed in a local shelter.
  • The Commonwealth Short Story Prize is an annual award for unpublished short fiction administered and funded by the Commonwealth Foundation. The prize covers the Commonwealth regions of Africa, Asia Canada and Europe, Caribbean and Pacific.

Dr. Usha Thakur Awarded 12th Vishwa Hindi Samman in Hindi Samvad Event

  • Dr. Usha Thakur was awarded the 12th Vishwa Hindi Samman (World Hindi Conference) at a Hindi Samvad event organised by the Embassy of India in Nepal.
  • The award recognised her contributions to the development of Hindi literature.
  • Dr. Thakur has translated over 40 works into Hindi and Nepali, strengthening the Hindi language.
  • The award is given by the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India.
  • The 12th World Hindi Conference was held in Fiji in 2023.
  • Dr. Thakur could not attend the conference in Fiji, so she received the award at an event held at Tribhuvan University in Kathmandu, Nepal.
  • The World Hindi Conference is a global event, which celebrates the Modern Standard Hindi register of the Hindustani language. It gathers Hindi scholars, writers, and laureates from various parts of the world. Participants contribute to the promotion and development of the Hindi language.
