UP launches first Braille library in Lucknow

India ranks eighth globally in pharmacovigilance

India has risen to the eighth position globally in WHO pharmacovigilance contributions, according to statements by Health Minister J. P. Nadda during the Indian Pharmacopoeia 2026 release. The minister noted India's ascent from 123rd a decade ago and highlighted the addition of 121 new monographs in IP 2026, bringing the total to 3,340. PvPI progress covers key therapeutic areas such as anti-tubercular, anti-diabetic, and anti-cancer medicines, and the Indian Pharmacopoeia's global acceptance has expanded to 19 Global South countries. The government cites strengthened drug regulation, reporting, and quality standards as drivers of this improvement in patient safety and governance.

Karnataka Sets Record with 198 Organ Donations in 2025

  • Karnataka has recorded its highest-ever organ donation figures with 198 donations in 2025, setting a new milestone in the state's transplant history.
  • This has surpassed the previous record registered in 2023, when the state reported 178 organ donations.
  • According to health department, with this achievement, Karnataka has secured the third position nationally in organ donations for 2025, setting a milestone for the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO).
  • Among the States, Tamil Nadu topped the chart with 267 organ donations, followed by Telangana with 205. Karnataka stood third with 198 donations, while Maharashtra and Gujarat reported 153 and 152 donations respectively, according to official data.

Abu Dhabi Hospital First to Administer ITVISMA for SMA

Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Khalifa Medical City became the first hospital globally to administer ITVISMA, a one-time gene therapy for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). The treatment was delivered in December 2025 under the supervision of the Department of Health, Abu Dhabi. Developed by Novartis, ITVISMA replaces the defective SMN1 gene to enable production of the survival motor neuron protein. The therapy is approved for patients two years and older, including adults, expanding access beyond infant-only treatment. The milestone highlights advances in precision medicine and international collaboration in genetic therapies.
