World Kiswahili Language Day

  • On July 7, 2024, the world came together and celebrated the 3rd World Kiswahili Language Day at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. The 2024 theme, 'Kiswahili: Education and Culture of Peace', highlighted the important role of this African language in promoting understanding and harmony across cultures.
  • The General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) at its 41st session held in Paris, France, in 2021 proclaimed July 7 of each year as World Kiswahili Language Day, making it the first African language to be recognised in such a manner by the UN.

Global Forgiveness Day

  • Global Forgiveness Day dedicated to creating goodwill and helping people to stop carrying around so much guilt and pain is observed on July 7.
  • This day was first established in 1994 by the Christian Embassy of Christ's Ambassadors in Canada. It was originally called Forgiveness Day, and it was renamed Global Forgiveness Day when it gained popularity around the world.

International Day of Cooperatives

  • The United Nations' (UN) International Day of Cooperatives is observed on the first Saturday of July each year.
  • On December 16, 1992, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed in resolution 47/90 "the first Saturday of July 1995 to be International Day of Cooperatives, marking the centenary of the establishment of the International Cooperative Alliance. Since 1995 the United Nations' International Day of Cooperatives has been observed jointly alongside International Cooperative Day.
  • The theme for International Day of Cooperatives 2024 is 'Cooperatives Building a Better Future for All'.

World Zoonoses Day

  • World Zoonosis Day is celebrated on 6th July every year. World Zoonosis Day is observed annually on July 6 to commemorate the first vaccinations against zoonotic diseases such as influenza, Ebola and West Nile virus. On July 6, 1885, French biologist Louis Pasteur administered the rabies vaccine to a small boy who had been bitten by a rabid dog. This vaccine saved the boy from infection. So every year this date is celebrated as World Zoonosis Day.

  • National Workaholics Day is observed on July 5, every year.
  • This day is dedicated to bringing attention to the negative impact of work ethic on various aspects of life, including family, friends, and health.
  • The history of National Workaholics Day dates back to the 16th century, when the idea of "good works" was first introduced. The concept was first espoused by the Puritan sect, which saw work as an obligation that benefited everyone in society.

International Plastic Bag Free Day

  • International Plastic Bag Free Day is celebrated on July 3 every year. The day is dedicated to promoting a zero-tolerance approach to plastic pollution and the importance of recycling and composting plastic waste.
  • Bag Free World organisation established the International Plastic Bag Free Day. This organization introduced several campaigns promoting a plastic-free world that inspired other parts of the world to participate in Plastic Bag Free Day. Rezero, a member of Zero Waste Europe (ZWE), initiated the first International Plastic Bag Free Day which was observed on July 3, 2008. In 2015, the European Union also passed certain directives to reduce the usage of single-use plastic bags. Bangladesh became the first country to ban the use of single-use, thin plastic bags officially in 2022. Soon after, many more countries, including India, also banned single-use plastic.

World Sports Journalists Day

  • World Sports Journalists Day is celebrated every year on July 2 to honour those who bring sports stories to life – the sports journalists.
  • The International Sports Press Association (AIPS) started World Sports Journalists Day in 1994. This date is important because AIPS itself was formed on July 2, during the Summer Olympics in Paris.

World UFO Day

  • World UFO Day is celebrated on July 2, every year. This day is dedicated to bringing people together to discuss the possibility of aliens and UFOs. The day is organized by WorldUFODay.com.
  • Established in 2001 by UFO researcher Haktan Akdogan, the day was first observed on June 24 to commemorate American pilot Kenneth Arnold's observation of unknown flying objects. The date was later changed to July 2 to coincide with the Washington, DC sightings.
