Nigeria Football Legend Peter Rufai Passes Away

  • Peter Rufai, the former Nigeria national football team goalkeeper, passed away at the age of 61. He was known for his role in Nigeria's 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) victory and played in two FIFA World Cups. His death has led to tributes from across the football world.
  • Peter Rufai, also known as Dodo Mayana, was one of the best goalkeepers in Nigeria's football history. He played a major role in the Super Eagles' 1994 AFCON victory and helped the team reach the last 16 of the FIFA World Cup in both 1994 and 1998. Born in Lagos, he had a successful international career with 65 caps from 1983 to 1998.

Diogo Jota Passes Away

  • Portugal international and Liverpool forward Diogo Jota died at the age of 28.
  • At Liverpool, Jota enjoyed a successful spell, winning both the FA Cup and League Cup under former manager Jrgen Klopp. Most recently, he was part of the team that lifted the Premier League title in the 2024–25 season under new head coach Arne Slot.
  • Internationally, Jota featured for Portugal in multiple major tournaments. Earlier this year (2025), he was part of the squad that won the UEFA Nations League, appearing during extra time in the final against Spain. He also represented his country at Euro 2024.

IIT Guwahati Student Appointed as Commonwealth Youth Peace Ambassador

  • Sukanya Sonowal, a final-year B Tech student from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, was appointed to the Executive Committee of the Commonwealth Youth Peace Ambassadors Network (CYPAN). She will serve as the Lead for Communications and Public Relations for the 2025–2027 term.
  • CYPAN is a youth-led initiative working across 56 Commonwealth nations to promote peace and counter violent extremism through dialogue, community service, and outreach.
  • Sonowal's appointment follows a three-stage selection process that assessed candidates on their commitment to peacebuilding, knowledge of Commonwealth values, and leadership experience.

Former Deputy NSA Dutt Passes Away

  • Shekhar Dutt, a former Defence Secretary and former Deputy NSA, died at the age of 79. Dutt also served as the Governor of Chhattisgarh. He had served the Army in the 1971 war with Pakistan as an emergency commissioned officer. He was awarded the Sena Medal for Gallantry.
  • In the IAS, he served as Defence Secretary from July 2005 to July 2007. Upon superannuation, he was appointed Deputy National Security Adviser, and in 2010, he was appointed Governor.

Former England Batter Wayne Larkins Passes Away

  • Former England and Northamptonshire batsman Wayne Larkins died aged 71.
  • Between 1979 and 1991, Larkins, well known as 'Ned', participated in 13 Tests and 25 One Day Internationals. His second appearance for England was at the 1979 World Cup final, where he batted at No. 7 and bowled two overs. However, his greatest moment came when he scored the winning runs at Sabina Park, giving England a surprise 1-0 lead on the 1989-90 tour of the West Indies.
