Centre Clears India's 2030 CWG Bid

  • The Union Cabinet approved the submission of India's bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games (CWG), marking a significant step in the country's growing ambition to stage major international sporting events. Alongside the bid, the Cabinet also sanctioned the signing of a Host Collaboration Agreement and assured grant-in-aid to the Gujarat government if the bid is accepted.
  • Ahmedabad has been earmarked as the host city, with officials highlighting its world-class infrastructure, training facilities, and sporting culture. The Narendra Modi Stadium, the largest in the world, has already showcased its capacity to host global events, most notably the the ICC men's World Cup in 2023.

Diamond League Final 2025 Javelin

  • Neeraj Chopra ended second in the Diamond League final with a best throw of 85.01m. Chopra threw three "no-mark" attempts on the trot in the middle and it was only his final throw of 85.01m that helped him secure second spot ahead of Keshorn Walcott. The winner was Germany's Julian Weber, who threw the javelin over 91 metres.

National Squash Championship: Velavan Senthilkumar & Anahat Singh Clinch Titles

  • Top seed Anahat Singh completed a hat-trick of titles by winning the women's singles event at the National Squash Championship 2025 in New Delhi.
  • The 81st edition of India's senior National Squash Championship was held from August 23 to 28.
  • Anahat Singh, India's highest-ranked women's squash player in the world, defeated second seed Akansha Salunkhe 3-0 (11-7, 11-6, 11-4) in the final at the Major Dhyan Chand Stadium.
  • In the men's draw, Velavan Senthilkumar reclaimed the title with a hard-fought 3-1 (11-8, 11-9, 4-11, 11) 8 victory over last year's champion Abhay Singh. Senthilkumar had lost to Abhay Singh in the previous final in Mumbai last year.
  • The 2025 edition, hosted in the capital for the first time in seven years, was contested only in singles.

Elavenil Valarivan Wins Gold in Asian Shooting Championship

  • Elavenil Valarivan clinched the gold medal in women's 10m air rifle competition at the Asian Championships.
  • The silver went to China's Xinlu Peng with a score of 253, while Korea's Eunji Kwon (231.2) took home the bronze.
  • The 16th Asian Championships (Shooting Rifle/Pistol/Shotgun) are taking place from August 16–30, 2025, in Shymkent, Kazakhstan.

Bihar Hosts 12th Men's Asia Cup at Rajgir Hockey Stadium

  • Bihar is hosting the 12th edition of the Men's Asia Cup at the newly developed Rajgir Hockey Stadium in Nalanda district from August 29, culminating with the final on September 7.
  • Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar unveiled the mascot 'Chand' and the 'Trophy' for the Hero Asia Cup 2025.
  • This men's hockey tournament features top teams from India, China, Japan, Chinese Taipei, Malaysia, Korea, Kazakhstan, and Bangladesh.

  • The Yuva Andhra Championship 2025, a feeder into the Telugu Kabaddi League, concluded at the Chennupati Ramakotaiah Municipal Corporation Indoor Stadium. Amravati Crushers emerged champions after topping the Super 4 stage.

Ravichandran Ashwin Announces Shocking IPL Retirement

  • Ravichandran Ashwin, one of India's finest cricketing minds and legendary off-spinners, officially retired from the Indian Premier League (IPL), bringing an end to a decorated domestic T20 career. Having last played for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in 2025, the veteran's announcement marks the end of an era. With his exit from both international and IPL circuits, Ashwin now sets his sights on exploring global T20 leagues, an opportunity made possible only after stepping away from Indian cricket.

  • Koyel Bar left the world stunned with her record-shattering performance in the women's 53kg youth category. She lifted a total of 192kg (85kg + 107kg), setting new youth world records in total and clean and jerk.

  • India's Sift Kaur Samra won the gold medal in the women's 50m rifle 3 positions event, at the Asian Shooting Championship 2025 in Shymkent, Kazakhstan.
  • Before extending her dominance in the tournament, she bagged a team gold with Ashi Chouksey and Anjum Moudgil.
  • She tallied 459.2 points to top the standings ahead of the People's Republic of China's Yujie Yang, who finished with 458.8 points.

NorthEast United Retain Durand Cup 2025 with 6-1 Win

  • NorthEast United FC stamped their authority on Indian football by retaining the Durand Cup title with a dominant 6-1 victory over debutants Diamond Harbour FC in the 134th edition of the tournament. The final, played at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata, saw the Highlanders lift the trophy for the second year in a row, becoming the first team in 25 years to successfully defend the title.

Czech Republic's Petra Kvitova Retires

  • Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova retired from tennis after being knocked out of the US Open.
  • She was beaten 6-1 6-0 by France's Diane Parry in their first-round meeting in New York.
  • Kvitova's two-decade career had many memorable highlights, but her two victories at Wimbledon will always be the pinnacle.
  • In the 2011 tournament, she beat Maria Sharapova 6-3 6-4 in the final to seal her first Grand Slam success.
  • And she was celebrating on Centre Court again in 2014 as she claimed her second title in south west London.

Mirabai Chanu Wins Gold at Commonwealth Championship

  • Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu won a gold medal at the 2025 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Ahmedabad and marked a triumphant return to competitive action. The Tokyo Olympics silver medallist lifted a total of 193kg and set new Commonwealth Championship records in snatch, clean and jerk, and total, finishing atop the women's 48kg podium. This included 84kg in snatch and 109kg in clean and jerk, both setting new Commonwealth Championship records. The win also secured her direct qualification for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Aishwary Tomar Wins Gold at Asian Shooting 2025

  • India's Aishwary Tomar won the gold medal in the men's 50m rifle 3 positions event at the Asian Shooting Championship 2025 in Shymkent, Kazakhstan.
  • In the final, Aishwary Tomar shot 462.5 and edged out the People's Republic of China's Zhao Wenyu (462.0).
  • This was Aiswary's second Asian title in the same event, having clinched a gold in 2023 as well.
