India's Ramsar Site Tally Touches 91 as Two more Rajasthan Wetlands Gain Recognition

  • On the eve of World Environment Day, India added two more wetlands—Khichan in Phalodi and Menar in Udaipur—to the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance. With these additions, India's total count of Ramsar Sites now stands at 91.
  • Bhupender Yadav, Union Cabinet Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change and Lok Sabha MP from Alwar announced the news.
  • A Ramsar Site is a wetland designated as being of international importance under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, an intergovernmental treaty adopted in 1971 in the Iranian city of Ramsar. The convention aims to ensure the conservation and wise use of wetlands to maintain their ecological character and benefits for current and future generations.

Telangana Notifies Kumram Bheem Conservation Reserve to Boost Tiger Corridor

  • The Telangana State government declared the tiger corridor area connecting the Kawal Tiger Reserve in the State with the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra as 'Kumram Bheem Conservation Reserve', as per the provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
  • Spanning nearly 1,493 sq. km, this newly declared reserve strengthens efforts to protect India's big cat population and other critical biodiversity in the central Indian landscape.

Mount Etna Erupts as Large Plumes Rise from Volcano

  • Italy's Mount Etna erupted, with large plumes of ash and smoke seen rising from the volcano.
  • A number of explosions of increasing intensity were recorded, Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) Etna Observatory said.
  • Mount Etna is one of the world's most active volcanoes, so eruptions are not uncommon and its outbursts rarely cause significant damage or injury.

Global Temperature Likely to Breach 1.5°C in Next Five Years

  • The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has raised a serious warning about climate change. According to a recent report, there is a 70% chance that global temperatures will cross the 1.5°C limit above pre-industrial levels between the years 2025 and 2029.
  • The WMO's report titled "Global Annual to Decadal Climate Update (2025-2029)," says that the Earth's average temperature between 2025 and 2029 could be between 1.2°C and 1.9°C above pre-industrial levels.
  • This prediction is based on current climate trends.
  • Also, there is an 80% chance that at least one of the next five years will break the record set in 2024, which was already the hottest year ever recorded.
