Jaishankar Embarks on Visits Netherlands, Denmark and Germany

  • External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar embarked on a six-day visit of the Netherlands, Denmark and Germany during which he is expected to highlight Pakistan's relentless support for cross-border terrorism.
  • Jaishankar will meet the leadership of the three countries and hold discussions with his counterparts on the entire gamut of bilateral relations, regional and global matters of mutual interest.

  • The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) observed Swachhata Pakhwada 2025 from May 1 to 15, 2025 at its Headquarters in New Delhi and across all its constituents' laboratories/ institutes/units, as part of the Government of India's flagship Swachh Bharat Mission, aimed at realising Mahatma Gandhi's dream of a clean and hygienic India. The "Swachhata Pakhwada" is a concept inspired by the Prime Minister's vision. The Pakhwada was organized in accordance with the Calendar of Swachhata Pakhwada 2025 issued by the Cabinet Secretariat, Government of India

After Tharoor, Manish Tewari Agrees to be on Government Outreach Panel

  • After Shashi Tharoor, Chandigarh MP and former Minister Manish Tewari declared he would travel with the government delegation appointed to undertake global outreach on Operation Sindoor and Pakistan-sponsored terrorism.
  • Tharoor and Tewari, besides Salman Khurshid and Amar Singh, are among Congress leaders who feature in the final list of multi-party delegations the government finalised for travel across countries between May 24 and June 3. None of these four are on the official Congress nominee list for the exercise.

Yusuf Pathan Drops Out of 'Terror Outreach' Delegation

  • Trinamool Congress (TMC) lawmaker and former Indian cricketer Yusuf Pathan withdrew his name from the all-party delegation that will visit international capitals disseminating India's stance on Operation Sindoor across the globe. Trinamool is the only party so far to withdraw its MP from the delegation.
  • According to two TMC leaders, the party objected to the way the government directly nominated a TMC MP without consulting the party.

  • John Barla, who represented Alipurduar constituency from 2019 to 2024, started distancing himself from the BJP since he was denied a ticket in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Central Government Appoints Solicitor General Tushar Mehta-led Team for the 26/11 Trial

  • The Central government appointed a team of special public prosecutors (SPPs), headed by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, to conduct the trial in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack case.
  • Pakistani-origin Canadian-American, Tahawwur Rana, is an accused in the case, and he was extradited to India from the United States last month.
  • Apart from Mehta, Additional Solicitor General S. V. Raju and senior advocates Dayan Krishnan and Narender Mann are part of the prosecutorial team.
  • They will represent the National Investigation Agency (NIA) before the special courts at Delhi, the High Court of Delhi and the Supreme Court of India.

  • India and the European Union (EU) launched two major research and innovation initiatives under the India-EU Trade and Technology Council (TTC). The TTC was established in 2022, by Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi and European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen to strengthen the bilateral partnership on trade and technology. With a joint investment of Rs. 391 crore, the initiatives focus on two coordinated calls in the areas of Marine Plastic Litter (MPL) and Waste to Green Hydrogen (W2GH), co-funded by Horizon Europe—the EU's research and innovation framework programme—and the Government of India.

Harvansh Chawla Takes Charge as Chairman of BRICS Chamber of Commerce & Industry

  • Harvansh Chawla, Founder and Managing Partner of K.R. Chawla & Co. Advocates, was appointed as the new Chairman of the BRICS Chamber of Commerce & Industry (BRICS CCI). This leadership change highlights the Chamber's renewed commitment to fostering robust economic collaboration among the BRICS nations—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. With over 30 years of expertise in corporate law and international trade, Chawla is expected to drive innovative cooperation and sustainable growth across the bloc.

'Inclusive India Summit'

  • The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, organised the 'Inclusive India Summit' on the occasion of Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) on May 15, 2025. GAAD is dedicated to raising awareness around digital access and inclusion for persons with disabilities across the globe. This day is observed annually on the third Thursday of May.
  • This summit was held in a hybrid mode, both physical and virtual at the India International Centre, New Delhi. It was conducted in partnership with SBI Foundation and the National Association for the Blind (NAB), New Delhi, besides collaboration with the Association of People with Disability (APD) and Mission Accessibility (Dhananjay Sanjogta Foundation).
  • The objective of the summit was to promote inclusive development and digital accessibility in the country, while strengthening collaboration between the government, industry, academia, civil society, and the Divyang community to ensure equal opportunities and accessible environments for persons with disabilities.

Former Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar Appointed UPSC Chairman

  • The government appointed former defence secretary Ajay Kumar as the Chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), filling the vacancy caused by former Chairperson Preeti Sudan's retirement in April.
  • Members of the commission have a term of six years or till they attain the age of 65 years.
  • Kumar, a 1985 batch IAS officer of Kerala cadre, retired as defence secretary in 2022. His term as UPSC Chairman would be till October 2027, when he turns 65.

Western Regional Power Conference

  • The Regional Power Conference for Western States was held in Mumbai, with the presence of key Union and State leaders, including Union Power Minister Manohar Lal and Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis. The conference brought together power ministers, officials, and utility leaders from Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, and Madhya Pradesh to address pressing challenges and opportunities in the power sector. Key focus areas included smart metering, reducing AT&C losses, enhancing transmission capacity, and creating special green energy zones to help India achieve Net Zero emissions by 2070.
  • The Western Regional Power Conference aimed to strengthen cooperation between Central and State governments to address the evolving needs of the Indian power sector.

Addressing the 'Bharat 6G 2025'-3rd International Conference and Exhibition in New Delhi, he highlighted the country's transformation from a technology adopter to a standard-setter, and urged all stakeholders to treat Bharat 6G not merely as a technical pursuit but as a national mission.
  • The event brought together global technology leaders, researchers, and policymakers to align on India's roadmap to becoming a pioneer in sixth-generation (6G) communications technology.

IWAI Sets Up Its New Office in Srinagar

  • In a move that is set to strengthen the Inland Water Transport (IWT) sector in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways set up its new office in Srinagar's Transport Bhawan. This office will be central to all the IWT works being undertaken by the Authority in the region.
  • IWAI signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the government of Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir to develop river navigation infrastructure in three national waterways in the Union Territory i.e. NW-26 (River Chenab), NW-49 (River Jhelum), NW-84 (River Ravi).
