Antarctic Parliament Meets in Kochi

  • India is hosting the 46th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM 46), also known as the Antarctic Parliament, from May 20-30 in Kochi. The National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research, Goa, through the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), has organised the meeting.
  • The ACTM aims to foster international collaboration on scientific research and sustainable resource management in the icy continent, along with discussing the principles and objectives of the Antarctic Treaty, which went into effect in 1961. The Treaty currently has 56 parties, including India.

Vice President Dhankhar Attends Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi's Funeral in Tehran

  • Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar travelled to Tehran and attended the funeral of late Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, his foreign minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian and other officials who were killed in a helicopter crash.
  • President of India, Droupadi Murmu, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed their condolences to the government and people of Iran.
  • Raisi's body was buried in his birthplace, Mashhad, Vice-President of the Republic, Mohsen Mansouri, announced.

BARC Appoints Dr. Bikramjit Chaudhuri as Chief of Measurement Science

  • The Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) India appointed Dr. Bikramjit Chaudhuri as Chief of Measurement Science and Analytics. He succeeded Dr. Derrick Grey, who left the organisation after a six-year stint.
  • Dr. Chaudhuri holds a Ph.D. from IIT Bombay and a Master of Statistics degree from the Indian Statistical Institute, Delhi. He brings with him a wealth of experience spanning over three decades in diverse fields such as Statistics, Stochastic Modelling, Market Measurement, Consumer Segmentation, Artificial Intelligence (AI) & Machine Learning (ML), Demand Forecasting, and Big Data Analytics. He has several research papers, publications, and patents to his credit in these areas.

3,300 CISF Contingent Takes Full Charge of Parliament Security; CRPF Exits

  • More than 3,300 CISF personnel took over the complete counterterrorism and anti-sabotage security duties at the Parliament complex following the withdrawal of over 1,400 CRPF staff from the country's most important symbol of democracy.
  • The parliament duty group (PDG) of the CRPF wound up its entire administrative and operational paraphernalia — vehicles, weapons and commandos — from of the complex and its commander, a deputy inspector general (DIG)-rank officer, handed over all the security points in the complex to the incoming CISF group.

Baramulla Create History with Record Voter Turnout in Phase 5 of Lok Sabha Polls

  • History was created in the Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency as it recorded a 59% voter turnout, the highest ever in the history of the constituency. Former terrorists, their families, and members of Jamaat-e-Islami cast their votes for peace and a better future.
  • Active terrorist Umar's brother, Rauf Ahmed, showed great courage and love for democracy by voting from Ussu village, once a stronghold of separatists. In the last five elections, no more than 2-3% voting has taken place in this area, but today a huge turnout was recorded.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Receives First Stamp Released Commemorating Completion of 200 Years of India...

  • Indian spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar received the first stamp released commemorating the completion of 200 years of Indian Origin Tamils in Sri Lanka. Governor of the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka Senthil Thondaman presented the stamp to Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. Mr. Thondaman said that the stamp is a way to attain recognition for the community which has been neglected for decades. He thanked the Indian government as well as the Sri Lankan government for the assistance given to the IOT community.

Shinku La Tunnel Work to Begin by Mid-September

  • The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) will begin work in mid-September on the Shinku La tunnel, which will provide all-weather connectivity from Manali to Leh via the Nimmu-Padam-Darcha axis. The tunnel, located at an altitude of 15,800 feet, is expected to be completed in four years and will become the world's highest tunnel, surpassing China's Mila tunnel at 15,590 feet.
  • Shinku La tunnel is a mountain pass in India, on the state boundary between Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh.
