India Finishes at 5th Spot in Inaugural FIH Hockey5s Men's World Cup

  • India finished at the fifth spot in the inaugural FIH Hockey5s Men's World Cup Oman 2024 in Muscat after defeating Egypt in their final game by 6-4.
  • India dominated from the outset, with Mohammed Raheel and Pawan Rajbhar scored early to establish a 2-0 lead. The momentum continued as Maninder Singh, Mandeep Mor and Uttam Singh added goals in quick succession, and extended India's advantage.
  • The 2024 Hockey5s World Cup was the first edition of the FIH Men's Hockey5s World Cup, the quadrennial world championship for men's national hockey5s teams organized by the FIH. It was held in 2024, in Muscat, Oman.
  • The Netherlands won the tournament after a win over Malaysia.

Smooth Sailing for Vishnu, Books Paris Berth

  • Asian Games bronze medallist Vishnu Sarvanan became the first Indian sailor to qualify for successive Olympics. A Subedar from the Mumbai-based Army Yachting Node, he secured qualification for the Paris Games by finishing 26th out of 152 participants in ILCA-7 at the World Championships. He thus, became the first Indian sailor to make the cut for the Paris Games.

Asian Cricket Council 'Unanimously' Appoints Jay Shah as President

  • Asian Cricket Council (ACC) appointed Jay Shah as the president of the body for the third year in a row.
  • Jay Shah's extension was proposed by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) president Shammi Silva for the second time and the nomination was unanimously backed by all the members of the ACC.
  • Shah who is also Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) took the reins as president of ACC in January 2021 for the first time.
  • The Asian Cricket Council also known as ACC is a cricket organisation which was established in 1983, to promote and develop the sport of Cricket in Asia.
  • The ACC is headquartered in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Khelo India Youth Games 2024

  • Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG) 2024, the sixth edition of the flagship event under the Indian government's Khelo India initiative, concluded on January 31, 2024.
  • Over 5,600 athletes from all over the country competed at the Khelo India Youth Games 2024, which ran from January 19 to 31. Tamil Nadu hosted the KIYG 2024 in four cities - Chennai, Madurai, Trichy and Coimbatore.
  • Maharashtra defended their Khelo India Youth Games title after topping the medals tally with 57 gold medals, 48 silver and 53 bronze, 158 medals in total. It was their fourth KIYG title.
  • Host state Tamil Nadu finished second with 38 gold, 21 silver and 39 bronze its best-ever finish (98 medals). Haryana, who won two KIYG titles, came third with 35 gold, 22 silver and 46 bronze medals (103 medals).
  • A total of 926 medals - 278 gold, 278 silver and 370 bronze - were on offer across 26 sports at KIYG 2024 Tamil Nadu.
  • The Khelo India Youth Games operates in a team championship format, wherein the medals earned by individual athletes or teams contribute to the overall medals tally of their respective state or Union Territory (UT). Upon the event's conclusion, the state or UT securing the highest count of gold medals is declared the winner.
