Periyar Tiger Reserve's Innovative Wind Turbine Installation

In a groundbreaking initiative, Periyar Tiger Reserve (PTR) in Thekkady, Kerala installed a wind turbine to power real-time monitoring cameras and Wi-Fi connectivity within its expansive forest. This move marks a significant advancement in the reserve's efforts to enhance conservation technology and communication.
The PTR East Division, encompassing 17 forest sections, previously relied on solar power for wireless communication and operational needs. However, the inefficiencies caused by the foggy climate and heavy rainfall often hindered the effectiveness of solar panels. The newly installed wind turbine aims to address these challenges by providing a more reliable energy source for monitoring and communication systems.

Wayanad Hit by Landslides

The death toll rose to 276, with over 200 injured as of August 1 morning, following a series of devastating landslides in the hilly areas near Meppadi in Kerala's Wayanad district. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan confirmed that 240 people remain missing, while more than 1,500 were rescued from the affected areas. Chief Minister Vijayan is in Wayanad, accompanied by Chief Secretary V. Venu and DGP Shaik Darvesh Sahib.

BIS and GBPUAT in Uttarakhand Sign MoU for Standardised Agriculture Demonstration Farm

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology (GBPUAT) in Uttrakhand signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to facilitate the development of the first of its kind 'Standardised Agriculture Demonstration Farm' (SADF) in India.
The MoU was signed in the presence of Dr. M. S. Chauhan, Vice-Chancellor, GBPUAT, and senior officials from the University and others.
The primary objective of this MoU is to develop SADFs at GBPUAT in collaboration with BIS. These farms will serve as experimental sites for testing and implementing various agricultural practices and new technologies in accordance with Indian Standards.

Odisha to Set up World's First Black Tiger Safari by End of this Year

Odisha is poised to unveil the world's first melanistic (black) tiger safari near Similipal Tiger Reserve in Mayurbhanj district by the end of this year (2024).
The state government's proposal for the safari received in-principle approval from the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), with the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) already granting its endorsement.
Initially, melanistic tigers currently housed at Nandan Kanan Zoo in Bhubaneswar will be relocated to the proposed safari, spanning 200 hectares adjacent to NH-18.
Approximately 100 hectares will be dedicated to the display area, while the remainder will accommodate veterinary facilities, a rescue centre, staff infrastructure, and visitor amenities. Located 15 km from Similipal Tiger Reserve, the site mirrors its natural landscape.
Similipal Tiger Reserve is globally renowned as the sole habitat where wild melanistic tigers are found.

Dustbins, Garbage Bags Mandatory in Vehicles Entering Uttarakhand

The Uttarakhand Government issued instructions to strictly enforce the rule of mandatory installation of dustbins and garbage bags in vehicles entering the state "to maintain its natural cleanliness".
Before issuing trip cards to vehicles, it should be ensured that they have a dustbin or garbage bag installed, Chief Secretary Radha Raturi said.
The State Transport Department wrote to the Transport Commissioners of Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Chandigarh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, informing them that it is mandatory for vehicles coming to the state during the Chardham Yatra to have dustbins and garbage bags installed to prevent travellers from littering roads.

Vriksharopan Abhiyan 2024 Launch in Dhanbad

The Union Minister of Coal and Mines, G. Kishan Reddy, launched the Vriksharopan Abhiyan 2024 in Dhanbad. This is a part of the visionary campaign of 'Ek PedMaa Ke Naam' by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This event was held simultaneously in about 300 locations of 47 districts in 11 coal/lignite-bearing states, a PIB press release stated.
The Vriksharopan Abhiyan 2024 is a significant step towards achieving the environmental goals of the coal industry. In the last five years, Coal/Lignite PSUs have planted a total of 24 million saplings on a land of 10,942 hectares to make the environment green.
The PSUs are committed to planting a cover of 15,350 hectares of green cover under the coalfields in the next five years. The target for the current fiscal year is 2,600 hectares. The PSUs are using innovative techniques such as Miyawaki method, seed balls, and drone technology to enhance the efficiency of their reforestation efforts.
