World Day for Safety and Health at Work

Every year April 28 is celebrated as World Day for Safety and Health at Work all over the world. World Day for Safety and Health at Work Day is observed to promote the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases globally.
The International Labour Organization (ILO) established the World Day for Safety and Health at Work in 2003 as an annual global initiative to raise awareness of the importance of safety and health in the workplace. The date chosen for this event coincides with the adoption of the Occupational Safety and Health Convention by the ILO on April 28, 1971.
The theme of the World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2024 is 'The impacts of climate change on occupational safety and health'.

World Veterinary Day

World Veterinary Day (WVD) is celebrated every year on the last Saturday of April (in 2024 April 27). This day is dedicated to recognise the efforts of veterinarians all over the world. The World Veterinary Day has a broader significance of promoting animal welfare worldwide.
The World Veterinary Association (WVA) established World Veterinary Day in 2000. It was first celebrated on 29 April 2000, and has been celebrated every year since. This day offers a significant opportunity to recognise and honour the enormous contributions of veterinarians to society and to raise awareness about the importance of veterinary medicine.
Each year, a different theme is chosen to highlight a specific aspect of veterinary medicine. The theme of World Veterinary Day 2024 is 'Veterinarians are Essential Health Workers'.

International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day

Every year, on April 26, we observe the International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day. This day is dedicated to remembering the victims of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster and raising awareness about this catastrophic event.
On April 26, 1986, the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine (formerly part of the Soviet Union) exploded, releasing a massive radioactive cloud into the atmosphere. This disaster exposed approximately 8.4 million people to harmful nuclear radiation.
The radioactive contamination devastated the surrounding areas, causing extensive damage to crops, plants, and infrastructure. The affected regions in Belarus, Ukraine, and Russia were heavily contaminated, posing a serious threat to human health and the environment.
In 1990, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution calling for international cooperation to address and mitigate the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster. This marked the beginning of the United Nations' involvement in the recovery efforts.
In 2016, the United Nations officially established the International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day to recognise the persistent long-term consequences of the disaster and support the affected communities and territories in their efforts to achieve sustainable development.

World Intellectual Property Day

The World Intellectual Property Day is celebrated every year on April 26. The day aims to raise awareness about intellectual property (IP) rights and its role in encouraging innovation and creativity to make the world a better place. The day was established in 2000 by the World Intellectual Property Office.
The day was first celebrated by the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) in 2000 with a focus on creating sustainable solutions.
WIPO, established in 1967, is the global forum for intellectual property (IP) services, policy, information and cooperation. This is a self-funding agency of the United Nations, with 193 member states to promote the protection of intellectual property rights.
The theme for World Intellectual Property Day 2024 is 'IP and the SDGs: Building Our Common Future with Innovation and Creativity'.

National DNA Day

The Human Genome Research Institute established National DNA Day to commemorate the discovery and research on DNA and the subsequent scientific advancements that have led to progress. The day is celebrated annually on April 25.
The history of National DNA Day dates back to 2003, when the Human Genome Project (HGP) was declared complete. The project, which was an international scientific collaboration, had the goal of determining the base pairs that make up human DNA and identifying all of the genes in the human genome.

World Malaria Day

Every year, World Malaria Day is observed on April 25.
Since 2001, African Governments have been celebrating Africa Malaria Day. In 2008, Africa Malara Day was changed to World Malaria Day at the 60th session of the World Health Assembly sponsored by World Health Organisation. They decided that the world needs to be more aware and cautious about the preventive measures against Malaria and mosquito bites. Hence, the day came to be celebrated every year.
The theme for World Malaria Day 2024 is 'Accelerating the fight against malaria for a more equitable world'.

World Day for Animals in Laboratories

World Day for Animals in Laboratories is observed on April 24.
In 1979, NAVS established World Day for Animals in Laboratories (also referred to as Lab Animal Day) on April 24 – Lord Hugh Dowding's birthday. This international day of commemoration is recognised by the United Nations, and is now marked annually by anti-vivisectionists on every continent.
In 1980, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), led by PETA Founder, Ingrid Newkirk, organised the first World Day for Laboratory Animals protest in the U.S.

National Panchayati Raj Day

Every year, National Panchayati Raj Day is celebrated on April 24.
According to historical records, Panchayati Raj was constitutionalised through the 73^rd Constitutional Amendment Act of 1993. The bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on December 22, 1992 and by Raj Sabha on December 23, 1992. Later, the bill was passed by 17 states.
This law came into effect on April 24, 1993. The then Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh, declared the first National Panchayati Raj Day on April 24, 2010.
