World Turtle Day

World Turtle Day is celebrated on May 23, every year. The day is dedicated to the protection and conservation of turtles and tortoises, which are two different animals but are often mistaken for one another.
It began in 2000 and is sponsored by American Tortoise Rescue.

International Day to End Obstetric Fistula

International Day to End Obstetric Fistula is observed every year on May 23. It is an international holiday for gathering support and spreading awareness about obstetric fistula, a childbirth-related injury that majorly affects women in poor economic regions.
The history of International Day to End Obstetric Fistula can be traced to 2003 when U.N.F.P.A. launched the 'Campaign to End Fistula.' In 2013, the United Nations began observing International Day to End Obstetric Fistula, making it an annual campaign.
This year's (2024) theme, 'Breaking the Cycle: Preventing Fistula Worldwide', underscores the urgent need to address obstetric fistula comprehensively, emphasizing equitable access to quality maternal health services, social reintegration, and sustained investment in healthcare systems.

International Day for Biological Diversity

International Day for Biological Diversity is celebrated on May 22 annually.
The International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) was established in 1993 by the United Nations General Assembly. The IDB is celebrated annually on 22 May to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. The IDB was established in response to the growing concern about the loss of biodiversity. Biodiversity is essential for human life and well-being. It provides us with food, shelter, and other essential resources. It also regulates our climate, purifies our water, and enriches our cultural heritage.
The theme for this year's (2024) International Day for Biological Day Diversity is 'Be part of the plan'.

World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development

Held every year on May 21, UNESCO leads the celebration of World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development highlighting not only the richness of the world's cultures, but also the essential role of intercultural dialogue for achieving peace and sustainable development.
In 2002, the United Nations declared World Day for Cultural Diversity would be celebrated every May 21.

National Anti-Terrorism Day

Every year on May 21 India celebrates Anti-Terrorism Day to commemorate the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, who was assassinated by a suicide bomber of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) at Sriperumbridor, a village now known as Chennai, on 21 May 1991. National Anti-Terrorism Day was first established in the country by the V. P. Singh government to commemorate the life of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and to educate people about the negative impact of terrorism and violence on society and the nation. The day also aims to promote peace and harmony in the country.

World Bee Day

World Bee Day, observed on May 20, marks the birth anniversary of Anton Janša, a pioneer in beekeeping. Established by the United Nations in 2017, this day highlights the critical role of bees in ensuring food security, biodiversity, and sustainable agriculture.
The 2024 theme, "Bee engaged with Youth," emphasizes the importance of involving young people in bee conservation efforts to protect these vital pollinators.
The theme for World Bee Day 2024 is "Bee engaged with Youth." This theme, decided by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), emphasizes the importance of engaging the younger generation in beekeeping and raising awareness about the crucial role bees play in our ecosystem. It aims to educate and involve youth in activities that promote bee conservation and sustainability.
World Bee Day was established after Slovenia's successful proposal to the United Nations in December 2017. The date, May 20, marks the birth anniversary of Anton Janša, a pioneer of modern beekeeping, who was born in 1734. With the support of the Slovenian Government and NGO Apimondia, the UN General Assembly adopted this day to honor the significance of bees and other pollinators. The inaugural World Bee Day was celebrated on May 20, 2018.

World Metrology Day

World Metrology Day is celebrated annually on May 20 globally to understand the meaning of the science of measurement and the reasons behind our heavy reliance on it.
World Metrology Day, also known as the Convention du Mètre, was first celebrated in 1985 during the General Conference of Weights and Measures (CGPM) to ensure that everyone used the same metric system to measure weight and length in order to ensure fair trade.
The day commemorates the anniversary of the signing of the Metre Convention in 1875, which established the foundations for international collaboration in the science of measurement and maintaining uniformity in measurements worldwide.
The theme for World Metrology Day 2024 is 'Sustainability', which encourages us to explore how metrology contributes to improving our lives every day.

International Museum Day

International Museum Day is celebrated every year on May 18. The event focuses on a different theme each year, reflecting relevant topics or challenges encountered by museums globally.
The inaugural International Museum Day was organised in 1977 by ICOM, following the adoption of a resolution aimed at creating an annual event to unite the creative efforts of museums and raise global awareness about their activities. Since then, museums worldwide have been invited to participate in IMD each year, promoting their role through events and activities aligned with the annual theme. The tradition of adopting an annual theme began in 1992, with the introduction of an international poster by ICOM in 1997, which was embraced by 28 countries that year.
The theme for 2024, 'Museums for Education and Research', emphasises the crucial role of cultural institutions in delivering a comprehensive educational experience.

World AIDS Vaccine Day

World AIDS Vaccine Day, also known as HIV Vaccine Awareness Day, is observed annually on May 18. The day is dedicated to recognising and promoting the need for AIDS vaccines. It also serves as an opportunity to show gratitude and honour the people such as doctors, scientists, and community members engaged in developing vaccines.
The day commemorates the speech made by then-President Bill Clinton at Morgan State University on May 18, 1997, where he emphasised the importance of creating a vaccine to stop the spread of the epidemic.
Since then, the day has been observed globally (starting in the year 1998) to spread awareness about the disease and the need for its vaccine.
