Kerala Makes Preamble to the Constitution Part of School Textbooks

  • In a first in the state, the revised school textbooks of Kerala will include a Preamble to the Constitution. General Education Minister V. Sivankutty said that the preamble of the Constitution will be included as the preface in all textbooks. There will be activities intended for children to imbibe it as part of the curriculum.
  • The state school curriculum steering committee gave approval to 173 textbook titles in a comprehensive curriculum revision for classes I, III, V, VII, and IX as part of curriculum reforms. The new textbooks for other classes will be ready by the 2025-26 academic year.

IIM Calcutta Appoints Saibal Chattopadhyay as New Director in Charge

  • Senior faculty member of IIM Calcutta Professor Saibal Chattopadhyay, was appointed as the director-in-charge of the premier B school. Chattopadhyay was appointed by the Board of Governors (BoG) with immediate effect.

IIT Madras Partners with Technology Firm Altair for E-mobility Lab

  • Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) partnered with Altair, a company providing solutions in simulation and high-performance computing and artificial intelligence, to start a laboratory for e-mobility.
  • The eMobility Simulation Lab at the department of engineering design, IIT Madras, will have the latest tools along with financial support from Altair.

Himachal's 'My School-My Pride' Campaign Empowers Education

  • In an endeavour to uplift government schools, the Himachal Pradesh government unveiled the 'My School-My Pride' campaign, urging individuals and organisations to adopt schools of their choice. Launched under the 'Apna Vidyalaya' programme, the initiative encourages voluntary contributions such as career counselling, remedial teaching, yoga training, and financial donations.
  • The 'My School-My Pride' campaign aligns with the vision of creating a support system for government schools facing teacher shortages or temporary absences. Adopters under this initiative will be actively involved in supporting schools and will be subject to a comprehensive monitoring system.

Kerala Launches Operation AMRITH to Combat AMR

  • The Kerala Drug Control Department took a proactive step to combat the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) through Operation AMRITH (Antimicrobial Resistance Intervention for Total Health). This initiative aims to curb the overuse of antibiotics in the state by conducting surprise raids in pharmacies and detecting over-the-counter (OTC) sales of antibiotics without a doctor's prescription.
  • Operation AMRITH activities align with Kerala's Antimicrobial Resistance Strategic Action Plan (KARSAP) and its antibiotic literacy initiative. Kerala, being the first Indian state with a state action plan on AMR aligned with the national plan, initiated the Antibiotic Literate Kerala Campaign to raise awareness about AMR.

I-STEM to Launch 'Samavesha' at IISc Bengaluru to Enhance Research Collaboration

  • The Indian Science, Technology, and Engineering facilities Map, known as I-STEM, is set to embark on a groundbreaking initiative named 'Samavesha.' This ambitious project, spearheaded by the Office of Principal Scientific Advisor, Government of India, aims to transform research collaboration in the country by facilitating easier access to scientific facilities and laboratories.
  • The project's core objective is to optimise the utilisation of research resources on a nationwide scale. In 2024, I-STEM plans to conduct approximately 50 'Samavesha' events across India.
  • One of the pivotal aspects of the project is the establishment of an online portal that will connect researchers and industries with scientific institutes. Through the I-STEM Portal, individuals seeking advanced scientific equipment can seamlessly connect with institutions possessing the desired equipment, enabling them to rent it for their experiments.

UGC Invites Authors to Write Books in 12 Indian Languages for UG Courses

  • The University Grants Commission invited Expression of Interest from authors, critics and faculty members of higher education institutes to write textbooks in 12 Indian languages for undergraduate-level courses in arts, science, commerce and social sciences.
  • The commission has invited applications for writing books in Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu.
  • This effort is in tune with NEP 2020's goal to provide learning opportunities to students in universities in Indian languages.

IIT Gandhinagar Collaborates with University of San Diego for Joint, Dual Degree Courses

  • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Gandhinagar and the University of San Diego, USA, entered into an agreement to collaborate in various academic, research, capacity building, training, and faculty/staff development activities.
  • With this new partnership, the institutes will offer joint double master's programmes, dual degree programmes at BTech and master's levels, including master's in engineering management and leadership and joint executive education programmes.
  • The MoU was signed and exchanged by Prof Chell Roberts, Dean, Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering (SMSE), University of San Diego, and Prof S. P. Mehrotra, Professor-in-Charge, External Relations, IITGN, in the presence of Prof G. B. Singh, Academic Director, University of San Diego, and Prof Rajat Moona, Director, IITGN, at the IITGN campus to pave the way for a fruitful and active partnership between both the institutes.

IIT Guwahati Pioneers Two-stage Biodegradation in Organic Waste

  • Researchers from the Waste Management Research Group (WMRG) at the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, led by Professor Ajay S Kalamdhad have developed a new approach to assist the municipal corporations to manage organic waste. The novel two-stage biodegradation technique combines Rotary Drum Composting with Vermicomposting (RDVC), resulting in an efficient and environmentally friendly process and enables municipal corporations to derive value-added products from organic waste. This technique was also used to produce nutrient-rich soil conditioner from invasive aquatic weeds like the Water hyacinth.
  • Compared to other waste biodegradation techniques that require 2-3 months, Rotary Drum Composting (RDC) can convert diverse organic feedstocks into nutrient-dense compost within just 20 days and significantly reduce the municipal waste volume by 60-70 per cent.

UGC Removes Meghalaya's Techno Global University from List of Universities

  • The Techno Global University, Shillong Polytechnic Campus, Mawlai, Shillong, Meghalaya was removed from the list of universities by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
  • UGC stated that the varsity's official website displayed following information: "Techno Global University, Shillong, has never started any academic activity since inception. We have never issued any mark-sheet, certificate and degree to any person. We have also never authorized any person or institution to act on behalf of us."
  • Due to this, UGC took the decision to remove the university from the official list.
  • "The Techno Global University, Shillong Polytechnic Campus, Mawlai, Shillong, Meghalaya was established by the Govt of Meghalaya as a State Private University. Therefore, the name of university was enlisted in the UGC list of universities in January, 2013.

UGC Chairman Launches IGNOU's Four-year UG Programmes

  • The University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar launched the four-year undergraduate programme (FYUP) of the Indira Gandhi National University (IGNOU).
  • The FYUP, considered a crucial reform in Indian higher education, seeks to provide students with diverse opportunities for enrolment.
  • Whether pursuing these courses as part of a regular program or opting for a simultaneous UG degree in a different discipline, IGNOU's FYUP offers a myriad of possibilities for students.

Schools in Uttarakhand to Have 'Bag-Free' Day every Month

  • The government of Uttarakhand took the decision to introduce 10 'bag-free' days per academic session in all the schools of the state in an initiative meant to reduce the load of books on children. The initiative is introduced in line with the new National Education Policy, 2020.
  • As per the information, one bag-free day will be seen by all upper primary and secondary schools on the last Saturday of each month from class 6 to class 12 each academic year.
  • This scheme is already working in primary schools in the state. The school observes such days as 'Pratibha Diwas' when students are allowed to take part in activities of their choice.
