Bharat Biotech's Krishna Ella Leads Indian Vaccine Manufacturers

  • In a significant development, the Indian Vaccine Manufacturers Association (IVMA) has announced the appointment of Krishna Ella, co-founder and executive chairman of Bharat Biotech, as its new president for the next two years, effective April 2024. Ella will take over the presidency from Adar C. Poonawala, who held the position from 2019 to March 2024.
  • In a statement, Ella emphasised the vital role of vaccines in global health and the IVMA's mission to ensure that every individual, regardless of their location, has access to life-saving immunisations. He highlighted the importance of innovation, sustainability, and equity as the foundations of their collective vision.

MAHE Confers Honorary Doctorate on K.V. Kamath

  • Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) honored K.V. Kamath, Chairman of National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development and Chairman of Jio Financial Services Ltd., with an honorary doctorate at a special convocation on April 29, 2024. The ceremony celebrated Kamath's exceptional leadership in banking, finance, and sustainable development, recognising his significant contributions to India's financial sector and global impact.
  • Distinguished dignitaries including Mrs. Vasanti R Pai, Dr. Ranjan R. Pai, Dr. H.S. Ballal, Lt Gen (Dr) M.D. Venkatesh, and other officials graced the ceremony.
  • Kamath, renowned for his leadership at NDB, ICICI Bank, and now NaBFID, has set benchmarks in the industry through strategic acumen and innovation.
  • Beyond professional achievements, Kamath's commitment to social responsibility and sustainable development has been instrumental in promoting inclusive growth and corporate social responsibility practices.

NCERT to Review Books Every Year

  • The Ministry of Education (MoE) has asked the NCERT to conduct a review of its textbooks and update them on yearly basis. So far, there has been no mandate on the frequency of updating NCERT textbooks. However, the National Council of Educational Research and Training has been occasionally revising and updating content since 2017.
  • A rationalisation exercise was also conducted in view of the closure of schools due to the pandemic but there were allegations from a section of agenda-driven editing.

JNU to Accept NET Score Instead of Entrance Exams for PhD Programmes

  • Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) announced a change in its selection process for admission to its Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes. Starting from the current academic year, JNU will accept the National Eligibility Test (NET) score instead of conducting its own entrance test, in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. This decision came after the University Grants Commission (UGC) issued a directive allowing universities to use the NET scores for PhD admissions.
  • The move to use NET scores for PhD admissions replaces the entrance test previously conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). According to the notice, JNU will implement this change for the academic session 2024-25.

Shiv Nadar, School of Oriental and African Studies Introduces MA in Global Urban Sociology

  • Shiv Nadar Institution of Eminence, deemed to be a University invited applications for a joint postgraduation programme in global urban sociology. The programme is in collaboration with the Department of Anthropology and Sociology at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. The programme focuses on global sociology and specifically on the global sociology of cities and urban life-worlds. 
  • Students will have to spend three months at SOAS University for term one (September-December) and five months for term two (January-May) at Shiv Nadar IoE. During term three (June-September), students will work remotely on their dissertation.
  • Students must complete 180 SOAS credits to be awarded and a co-badged certificate of MA in global urban sociology from SOAS and Shiv Nadar IoE. This includes a 60-credit dissertation and 120 credits of taught modules (half from each institution).

Guidelines for Supernumerary Seats for international Students

  • In a move aimed at promoting the internationalisation of Indian higher educational institutions (HEIs), the University Grants Commission (UGC) reiterated guidelines mandating the reservation of supernumerary seats for international students which had originally been released in September 2022.
  • Under the new guidelines, HEIs have been directed to allocate up to 25% supernumerary seats for international students. However, the decision to implement this quota rests with individual institutions, taking into account factors such as infrastructure and faculty availability.
  • Supernumerary seats are additional seats that are over and above the sanctioned intake approved by the appropriate authority and the government.

  • The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Hyderabad campus, introduced a dual degree programme in Master of Arts in Public Policy and International Relations in collaboration with Macquarie University, Australia. 
  • This dual degree programme is designed to equip aspiring policymakers with the interdisciplinary knowledge and skills essential for navigating the complexities of the present-day global landscape.
  • Individuals with an undergraduate degree in any discipline are eligible to apply, along with academic performance and English language proficiency.
  • The MA in public policy and international relations is a two-year, dual degree programme that allows students to earn two postgraduate degrees from two institutions. The curriculum, crafted by TISS Hyderabad and Macquarie University experts, provides a comprehensive understanding of policy frameworks, institutional dynamics, and international geopolitics.

Five-Month Executive Programme in Robotics by IIT Delhi

  • The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) introduced a 5-month executive programme in Robotics. The course which comprises 120 hours of online learning aims to provide professionals with the necessary skills and knowledge required to thrive in the ever-evolving field of robotics. By doing so, it aims to promote innovation and leadership within the industry.
  • The programme covers the fundamentals of robotics, including mechanical components, sensors, and artificial intelligence. The programme will be conducted via the state-of-the-art Interactive Learning (IL) platform and delivered in Direct-to-Device (D2D) mode.

Hindujas Inks New India-UK Healthcare Pact with King's College London

  • The Hinduja Group and King's College London announced a new partnership aimed at improving healthcare outcomes in India and the UK, through training and research capacity building as well as scholarships for Indian students.
  • King's College London, Guy's & St. Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, the Hinduja Foundation UK and Mumbai's P.D. Hinduja Hospital & Medical Research Centre run by the National Health & Education Society are involved in the new strategic partnership to advance two-way training, education and research capacity building.
  • It will lead to the creation of a new Hinduja-King's Health Partners Academy with the aim of driving forward the development of new technologies to address global healthcare challenges.

BHU Approves 14 New Scholarships and a Gold Medal

  • Banaras Hindu University's (BHU) academic council approved the proposal for 14 new merit-cum-means scholarships and one gold medal. The council was chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sudhir Kumar Jain, along with other members who discussed various issues of academic and research activities in the university and steps to further improve the overall performance and productivity. BHU's council also set up a project monitoring unit to improve the academic and research ecosystem further.
  • The University received many donations to start scholarships under the Pratidana initiative. The council also approved the Akshaibar and Jogeshwari Giri Gold Medals to be presented to a second-year MBA student securing the highest CGPA.

IIT Kanpur Introduces eMasters Degree in Sustainable Construction Practices and Project Management

  • The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) introduced a new online postgraduate degree programme 'Sustainable Construction Practices and Project Management'. Interested candidates who are seeking to make a career in the construction industry as project managers, construction managers, and sustainability consultants can apply at the official website.
  • Candidates can complete the programme in one to three years duration. Additionally, students do not require a GATE score.
  • Candidates should have completed their four-year bachelor's degree in civil, structural, construction, and allied engineering and architecture disciplines with at least 55 per cent marks with 2 years of work experience (an applicant need not be currently employed to be eligible).
