Bird Flu Virus Found in Beef from ill Cow, US Authorities Say Meat Safe to Eat

Bird flu has been detected in beef for the first time, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Friday, but officials said the meat from a single sickened dairy cow was not allowed to enter the nation's food supply and beef remains safe to eat.
The US department of agriculture (USDA) said on Friday that bird flu virus has been detected in beef from an ill dairy cow further adding that beef remains safe to eat as the virus was barred from entering the country's food supply. According to the USDA, the virus was discovered during testing of 96 dairy cows that were removed from the supply after government inspectors observed signs of sickness during routine carcass inspections at meat processing plants.

Oldest Known Human Viruses Discovered in 50,000-Year-Old Neanderthal Bones

The study revealed that Neanderthals could be infected with three common modern human viruses: adenovirus, herpesvirus, and papillomavirus. In modern humans, adenoviruses can cause cold- and flu-like symptoms, sore throat, and pink eye.
A new discovery sheds light on the ongoing mystery surrounding the extinction of Neanderthals, our closest extinct relatives. Researchers have found evidence of ancient viruses in 50,000-year-old Neanderthal bones, potentially offering a missing piece in the puzzle.
Previously, scientists theorised that infectious diseases might have played a role in the Neanderthals' demise. However, direct evidence was lacking due to the difficulty of extracting and sequencing ancient DNA.

First Human Case of 'Bird Flu' Reported in Australia

A child who came back to Victoria from India in March was the first person in Australia to get the H5N1 bird flu. The child had a serious sickness, but now fully better. Victoria's chief health officer confirmed that there have been no more cases tied to this incident. This shows how rare it is for this strain to be passed from person to person.
Avian influenza, also called "bird flu," is a very contagious virus that affects many types of birds, both wild and tame. It mostly spreads through direct touch or places that are contaminated with germs. People can get infected with the H5N1 type and get very sick from it, but this doesn't happen very often. Other strains, like H7N7, which is more common in Australia, have mostly harmed poultry.

IIT Madras to House 'Shell IITM Centre for Energy Research' Focusing Innovation

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras' (IIT Madras) Energy Consortium and Shell India partnered to launch the 'Shell IITM Centre for Energy Research' (SICER). The inauguration ceremony, which took place at the Shell Technology Centre in Bengaluru, marked a significant milestone in collaborative research and strategic engagement between academia and industry.
The collaboration will be centralised under SICER for five years and will promote innovation, research, development, piloting, and commercialisation of technologies in the energy sector.

SC Student Enrolment Sees 44% Increase from 2014 to 2022

The National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) reported a significant increase in student enrolment under various categories from 2014-15 to 2021-22. According to the data shared by the NCBC, enrolment of students from the Scheduled Caste (SC) category rose by 44 per cent, from 4.61 million to 6.62 million. Minority female student enrolment also saw a notable increase of 42.3 per cent, growing from 1.07 million to 1.52 million during the same period.
NCBC Chairman Hansraj Gangaram Ahir highlighted the government's efforts in enhancing the constitutional rights of Other Backward Classes (OBCs). The data showed that female SC enrolment increased by 51 per cent, while the enrolment of Scheduled Tribe (ST) students grew by 65.2 per cent, from 1.641 million to 2.71 million, with female ST enrolment increasing by 80 per cent.

ISB, IIM-Bangalore Make to Top 50 in FT's Executive Education Custom Ranking 2024

The Indian School of Business (ISB) and Indian Institute of Management- Bangalore (IIM-B) made it to the Financial Times's Executive Education Custom Ranking 2024. This year (2024), ISB ranked 26 and IIM- Bangalore secured the 48 position in the education ranking.
Institut Européen d'Administration des Affaires (INSEAD) secured the top position this year (2024) with a growth of 64 points. In 2023, the Institute had ranked at the second position. Under the overall satisfaction category, the business school scored 8.56. The Institute has its campuses in France and Singapore.
With a growth rate of 17 points, IESE Business School has been ranked in the second position.
The third spot is achieved by the International Institute for Management Development, followed by Duke Corporate Education, HEC Paris, SDA Bocconi School of Management, London Business School, ESMT Berlin, Essec Business School and Fundação Dom Cabral.
