World Bamboo Day

Every year on September 18, people worldwide celebrate World Bamboo Day, highlighting the amasing qualities of this fast-growing plant and recognising its importance globally.
Bamboo, a giant grass, is known for being hard and hollow. It holds the record for being the world's fastest-growing land plant.
Kamesh Salam, the founder of World Bamboo Day, initiated the celebration during the 8th World Bamboo Congress in Bangkok in 2009. This day was declared on September 18, aligning with Royal Thai Forestry Day for added historical significance.
The theme for World Bamboo Day 2024 is 'Next Generation Bamboo: Solution, Innovation, and Design'.

International Equal Pay Day

International Equal Pay Day, celebrated on September 18, represents the longstanding efforts towards the achievement of equal pay for work of equal value. It further builds on the United Nations' commitment to human rights and against all forms of discrimination, including discrimination against women and girls.

India Water Week

President Droupadi Murmu inaugurated the 8^th India Water Week on September 17 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. The biennial event is being held from September 17 to 20.
This four-day international water resources event, conceptualised by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, focuses on the theme 'Partnerships and Cooperation for Inclusive Water Development and Management'.
IWW was first organised in 2012 and has since been held biannually, with themes focusing on crucial water challenges. Previous editions have addressed issues like water management for sustainable development and water security for inclusive growth.

World Patient Safety Day

World Patient Safety Day is an annual observance on September 17, established by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to raise global awareness about patient safety, promote actions to enhance safety in healthcare, and encourage stakeholders to unite for safer healthcare practices. The day is recognised to address the significant burden of harm that unsafe medical practices cause worldwide.
In 2019, the 72^nd World Health Assembly passed a resolution to establish World Patient Safety Day as a global health priority. The WHO began global campaigns each year, focusing on various themes within patient safety, such as safe childbirth, medication safety, and the empowerment of patients and caregivers.
The theme for 2024, 'Improving Diagnosis for Patient Safety', emphasises the vital role of accurate and timely diagnosis in safeguarding patients and improving health outcomes.

World Ozone Day

World Ozone Day, celebrated on September 16 every year, is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of the ozone layer in protecting life on Earth. It has significantly depleted in recent years, and annually this day is commemorated to educate people more about how this is a concern. It also spreads awareness about the steps that have been taken to preserve the ozone layer.
The United Nations General Assembly established World Ozone Day in 1994 to celebrate the signing of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. The Montreal Protocol, agreed on September 16, 1987, is an international pact designed to phase out the production and consumption of ozone-depleting substances (ODS).
The theme for this year (2024) is "Montreal Protocol: Advancing Climate Action". The aim is to not only celebrate the accomplishments but also look forward to deeper and faster action under the Montreal Protocol in the future.

International Day of Democracy

International Day of Democracy is observed on September 15 every year, for which the world comes together to honour and uphold the values of democracy, which is considered to be one of the most popular forms of governance in the world.
The idea behind establishing the day is based on the Universal Declaration on Democracy, which was adopted by the Inter-Parliamentary Union on September 15, 1997. The Inter-Parliamentary Union is an international organisation of national Parliaments. The resolution of observing the day was passed at the UN General Assembly.
In November 2007, the United Nations decided to support the new and restored democracies all around the globe. The Inter-Parliamentary Union then decided to observe the day on September 15 to commemorate the adoption of the Universal Declaration on Democracy on this day.
The theme for International Day of Democracy 2024 is 'Navigating AI for Governance and Citizen Engagement'.

Hindi Diwas

Hindi Diwas 2024 is celebrated on September 14 each year. Hindi Diwas 2024 is dedicated to honouring and promoting the Hindi language throughout India. This year's (2024) observance marks the 75th anniversary of Hindi's adoption as one of the official languages of India by the Constituent Assembly in 1949.
Hindi Diwas emphasises the significance of Hindi as one of the most widely spoken languages in India and its role in fostering national unity. The day is marked by a range of activities, including competitions, events, and the 'अखिल भारतीय राजभाषा सम्मेलन', aimed at promoting the use of Hindi in both daily and official communication.
The history of Hindi Diwas traces back to September 14, 1949, when the Constituent Assembly of India made a landmark decision to adopt Hindi, written in the Devanagari script, as one of the official languages of the newly independent country. This decision aimed to foster linguistic unity in a diverse nation with many languages and dialects. Hindi Diwas has been celebrated annually since 1953, honouring and promoting the Hindi language and its role in India's cultural and national identity.

World First Aid Day

World First Aid Day is a global annual event observed annually on the Second Saturday of every September with the intention to promote awareness about the role of first aid in saving lives. In 2024 is was observed on September 14.
World First Aid Day was first introduced by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) in 2000. Henry Dunant was a young merchant who observed the Carnage at the battle of Solferino in 1859.
The theme for World First Aid Day 2024 is 'First Aid and Sports'.
