Prevention of Blindness Week 2024

Prevention of Blindness Week 2024 is celebrated by Centre from April 1 to 7 to make people aware of their eyes. Throughout the week people get education related to health care and eye care.
Jawaharlal Nehru and Raj Kumari Amrit Kaur founded the National Society for the Prevention of Blindness in 1960 under the Societies Registration Act of 1860. It is an entirely voluntary organisation that accepts donations and contributions and actively collaborates with Sight Savers, Rotary International and other significant companies.
Notably, India was also the first country to seek a subsidised loan from the World Bank's International Development Agency to eradicate blindness.

Odisha Foundation Day

On April 1, Odisha Day, or Utkala Dibasa, is celebrated to commemorate the formation of the state of Odisha. The occasion is joyously celebrated throughout the state, with individuals adorning their homes and public spaces with flags, banners and flowers in the colours of the state flag, symbolising the vibrant culture and heritage of Odisha.
Utkal Divas is not just a celebration of Odisha's formation but also a celebration of its rich heritage and culture. From traditional Odia recipes, folk music, dances, paintings to tourist attractions, the state holds immense cultural wealth and Utkal Divas is a wonderful event to pay tribute and experience all that the state has to offer.
The state of Odisha got its own identity as a separate state in the year 1936, after disassociating itself from Bihar and Bengal.

World Piano Day

World Piano Day was observed in 2024 on March 28.
World Piano Day is observed annually on 88^th day of the year because of the number of keys on the musical instrument 'Piano' (which is 88). It is celebrated to highlight the beauty, versatility, and cultural significance of one of the most beloved instruments.
The history of World Piano Day dates back to 2015, when it was officially established. Every year, Piano Day falls on 88^th day of the year because it corresponds to the 88 keys on a standard piano keyboard. Since its inception the World Piano Day has gained international recognition. It inspires exceptional live and virtual concerts each year, in addition to radio programmes, podcasts, and playlists.

World Theatre Day

World Theatre Day is celebrated every year on the 27th of March. This day is dedicated to the art form of theatre, and its importance in society. The day is observed to raise awareness about the role of theatre in our lives, and to promote its growth.
The World Theatre Day was established by the the International Theatre Institute (ITI) in 1962, and the first ever World Theatre Day was celebrated in the same year on the 27th of March.
The theme for World Theatre Day 2024 is 'Theatre and a Culture of Peace'.

Purple Day of Epilepsy

Purple Day of Epilepsy, a global campaign raising awareness for epilepsy, is observed on March 26 every year. This day is dedicated to raising awareness about epilepsy, a neurological condition that affects millions of people worldwide.
World Purple Day traces its origins back to 2008 when Cassidy Megan, a young Canadian girl, initiated the idea to increase awareness about epilepsy. Inspired by her struggles with the condition and the lack of understanding amongst her peers, Cassidy envisioned a day when people would wear purple to show support for individuals living with epilepsy.
The official theme for Purple Day of Epilepsy 2024 is 'Lets Talk About Epilepsy'. This powerful theme emphasises the importance of open communication and breaking down the stigma surrounding epilepsy.

The International Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing Staff Members

The United Nations observes the International Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing Staff Members on March 25 every year to honour the memory of Alec Collett, a journalist who died while on a UN mission after being kidnapped. The purpose of this day is to acknowledge the contributions of UN personnel and the risks they take to carry out humanitarian work, as well as to remember those who have lost their lives in service to the UN.
The International Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing Staff Members was first observed by the United Nations (UN) in 1993. The day was created to recognize the work of UN personnel who have been detained, kidnapped, or have gone missing while carrying out their duties on behalf of the UN. The date, March 25th, was chosen to commemorate the abduction of Alec Collett, a former journalist and UN staff member who was kidnapped in 1985 while on assignment for the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). Collett was held captive for over six years before his death in 1991.

International Day of the Unborn Child

The International Day of the Unborn Child is observed annually on March 25 to commemorate the opposition to abortion, established by Pope John Paul II. The day is recognised to create awareness among people about protecting the unborn children, advocating against abortion, and respecting the dignity of human life starting from the day of conception.
The International Day of the Unborn Child was established by the Pope John Paul II. He considered the day as a means to favour the beginning of life and respect the dignity of human kind right from the conception.
El Salvador in 1993 established the Day of the Right to Be Born. Various countries like Argentina, Republic of Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Chile established the Day of the Conceived and Unborn in 1999, the National Day of the Unborn in 2000, and the National Day of Life Before Birth in 2001.
Nicaragua is the first ever nation that observed the Day of the Unborn Child in 2000. Later, Dominican Republic and Peru also observed the day in 2001 and 2002 respectively.
