Indian Army Installs First ever Mobile Tower at Siachen Glacier

  • The Siachen Glacier, known as the world's highest battlefield, witnessed a groundbreaking development with the installation of a mobile tower. The Fire and Fury Corps of the Indian Army, in collaboration with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), achieved this remarkable feat, bringing enhanced mobile communication to soldiers deployed at elevations exceeding 15,500 feet.
  • This is the first-ever BSNL Base Transceiver Station (BTS) at forward posts in the Siachen Glacier region.

Coastal Security Exercise 'Sagar Kavach' Held in Andhra, TN, Puducherry

  • A two-day comprehensive Coastal Security Exercise 'Sagar Kavach' involving all maritime security agencies was conducted by the Indian Navy in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
  • The exercise was executed under the aegis of the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Eastern Naval Command, FOCINC (East) who also exercises the authority of Commander-in-Chief, Coastal Defence (East).
  • About 2,500 personnel from the Indian Navy, Coast Guard, State and the union territory administration, Marine Police, fisheries, customs, intelligence agencies, lighthouses, ports, and forest were engaged in the exercise.
  • The exercise aimed to assess the efficacy and robustness of the coastal security mechanism while dealing with "asymmetric threat" emanating from the sea.

Northeast's First Defence Tech Show in Guwahati

  • The first-ever defence tech show in the Northeast was hels in Guwahati. From cutting-edge technology to top-end gear, nearly 200 manufacturers put up their stalls at the two-day 'East Tech', inaugurated by Assam Industries and Commerce Minister Bimal Borah and General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Eastern Command Lt Gen Rana Pratap Kalita.
  • The tech show was jointly organised by the Indian Army and the Assam government, with MSMEs, defence PSUs and start-ups also lining up their products.

Israeli Defence forces launch operation 'Iron Swords' following Hamas attacks;

  • Responding to Hamas's surprise attack, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) on Saturday launched operation 'Iron Swords'. IDF is striking Hamas targets in Gaza. "In response to the barrages of rockets launched by Hamas from Gaza at Israel, the IDF is currently striking Hamas targets in Gaza," 
  • Operation Iron Swords is Israel's retaliation for a surprise attack by Hamas, a Palestinian Islamist militant organisation, on Israel. On Saturday morning, Hamas launched the biggest attack on Israel in years, killing at least 100 people and claiming it had taken dozens of hostages.
  • The Israeli military said it had responded with air strikes into Gaza, where witnesses reported hearing heavy explosions and multiple dead and wounded being carried into hospitals. The Israeli military said navy forces killed dozens of Palestinian militants trying to infiltrate Israel by sea.

Annual Joint HADR Exercise 2023 (AJHE-23) - CHAKRAVAT 2023

  • The Annual Joint Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Exercise (AJHE) is a significant initiative that has evolved since its inception in 2015. It is a direct outcome of the directive issued during the Combined Commanders' Conference of 2015 by India's Honourable Prime Minister. Since then, AJHE, known as CHAKRAVAT, has grown into a multi-agency endeavour that includes the active participation of India's armed forces, paramilitary forces, disaster response organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), academic institutions, and international organizations.
  • The 2023 edition of AJHE promises to further synergize national efforts and expand its scope by involving eight countries from the Indian Ocean Region.
  • The Annual Joint HADR Exercise is conducted on a rotational basis by India's three armed services: the Indian Army, Indian Navy (IN), and Indian Air Force (IAF). The previous edition of the exercise was hosted by the IAF in Agra. In 2023, the Indian Navy hosted AJHE-23 in Goa from October 9 to 11, 2023.

Indian Navy Rolls Out '360 Degree Appraisal Mechanism'

  • The Indian Navy, known for its commitment to excellence and continuous improvement, embarked on a transformative initiative known as the '360 Degree Appraisal Mechanism.' This initiative recognises the invaluable contributions of both women and men in whites and aims to enhance their professional and personal development.
  • The Indian Navy has always prioritised its personnel as the cornerstone of its operational efficiency. The men and women who serve in white uniforms play a pivotal role in the Indian Navy's 'SHIPS FIRST' approach, which places the safety and effectiveness of naval operations above all else. This approach underscores the critical importance of having a skilled, motivated, and cohesive workforce.
  • Traditionally, the Indian Navy relied on periodic Confidential Reports submitted by senior officers as the primary mechanism for evaluating its personnel. While this system had its merits, it also had inherent limitations.
  • In response to these challenges, the Indian Navy introduced the '360 Degree Appraisal Mechanism.' This innovative initiative aims to address the shortcomings of the previous system by incorporating a broader perspective into the evaluation process.
  • The '360 Degree Appraisal Mechanism' involves a systematic survey process that includes input from a variety of sources, such as peers and subordinates, in addition to the traditional senior officer evaluations. The survey encompasses a wide range of questions, covering aspects like professional knowledge, leadership qualities, suitability in war and crisis situations, and potential for holding higher ranks.

Sagar Defence Unveils Vamana Autonomous Underwater Vehicle

  • Mumbai-based start-up Sagar Defence introduced its cutting-edge 'Vamana' Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), specially designed for the Indian Navy. The unveiling took place at the Indian Defence Expo (iDEX), showcasing India's growing autonomous prowess in underwater technology.
  • The Vamans AUV is a remarkable addition to India's naval capabilities. It boast to operate independently or as part of a coordinated swarm. This flexibility makes it a versatile asset for various maritime missions, including surveillance, reconnaissance, mine detection and more.

Air Chief Unveils New Ensign at Air Force Day Parade in Prayagraj

  • Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal V. R. Chaudhari unveiled a new ensign of the Indian Air Force (IAF), replacing the existing one that was adopted more than seven decades back.
  • The IAF chief released the new ensign at the 91st IAF Day celebrations in Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj.
  • In the new ensign, the IAF crest features in the top right corner.
  • The unveiling of the new ensign by the IAF came over a year after the Navy made changes in its ensign shedding its colonial past.
  • The existing ensign was adopted in 1950, replacing the Royal Indian Air Force ensign that featured the Union Jack and the RIAF roundel (red, white and blue).

Eastern Command of Indian Army to Host Mega Defence Event 'East Tech 2023' in Guwahati

  • The Eastern Command of the Indian Army will host a mega defence event 'East Tech 2023', to showcase its latest defence technology.
  • The two-day event, the first of its kind in Assam, will be held at the Maniram Dewan Trade Centre in Guwahati on October 10 and October 11, 2023.
  • The event is an initiative to identify cutting-edge technologies needed for solving the operational challenges in the Eastern sector of the country and the Indian Army as a whole.
  • The event aims to facilitate the Eastern Command in meeting its operational challenges by incorporating contemporary indigenous technologies.
  • The event-cum-demonstration, being carried out for the first time in the entire North-eastern region, is a joint effort of the lndian Army and the Assam government.
  • The Eastern Command formed on November 1, 1920 with its headquarters at Kolkata is the oldest and largest command of the Indian Army spread around 10 states with its troops in coordination with all the three elements of the Indian armed forces and the paramilitary forces deployed to counter any threats from its neighbouring countries.
