Indian Navy Inducts Survey Vessel INS Sandhayak

  • The Indian Navy commissioned its latest survey vessel INS Sandhayak and the ship is expected to boost the force's surveillance apparatus in the strategic waterways. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Navy Chief Admiral R. Hari Kumar and Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command were among the distinguished guests who graced the occasion.
  • Built by the GRSE in Kolkata, the 110-meter-long INS Sandhayak displaces about 3,800 tonnes and boasts an impressive 80 percent indigenous content.
  • The new INS Sandhayak is not the first vessel to bear this name; it follows in the wake of its predecessor, which was decommissioned on June 4, 2021. However, this reincarnation brings with it enhanced features and capabilities, making it a formidable asset for the Indian Navy.

India's Rs. 6.21 Lakh crore Defence Budget

  • In a landmark move ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman disclosed the allocation of a staggering Rs. 6.21 lakh crore for India's Ministry of Defence during the Interim Budget presentation in Parliament. This marked a 4.3% increase from the previous year, constituting a substantial portion of the Union Budget at 13.04%.
  • A pivotal aspect of this year's defence budget is the introduction of a groundbreaking scheme by Finance Minister Sitharaman. This initiative aims to fortify DeepTech technologies for defence purposes, aligning with the pursuit of 'atmanirbharta' (self-sufficiency) within India's defence forces.
  • Breaking down the substantial allocation, Rs. 1.72 lakh crore is designated for military capital expenditure, Rs. 1.4 lakh crore for defence pensions, and Rs. 2.8 lakh crore for defence services. Capital expenditure spans salaries, pensions, modernisation, production establishments, maintenance, and research and development.

INS Nirupak Decommissioned at Visakhapatnam

  • Indian Navy's indigenously designed and built survey ship, INS Nirupak, was decommissioned after 38 years of illustrious service to the nation in a ceremony, presided by Vice Admiral Adhir Arora, Chief Hydrographer to the Govt of India at Naval Dockyard, Visakhapatna. The ship was launched on June 4, 1981 at GRSE and commissioned into service on August 14, 1985 by Vice Admiral Jayant Ganpat Nadkarni, then Chief of Naval Staff. The ship was based at Visakhapatnam under the administrative and operational control of FOCINC, ENC. In recognition to its relentless dedication in the field of hydrography, INS Nirupak was awarded Admiral Jal Cursetji Rolling Trophy for best Survey Ship in the year 1994, 1995, 2005 and 2009.

India, Oman Ink Pact for Collaboration in Defence Sector

  • India and Oman signed an agreement that would provide a framework for collaboration in new areas of defence engagement including procurement of military equipment. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was firmed up at a meeting of India-Oman joint military cooperation committee (JMCC) in Muscat.
  • The two sides also carried out a comprehensive review of their defence cooperation and explored ways to boost it in line with their shared strategic interests.
  • The MoU was signed over a month after India and Oman unveiled a joint vision document titled 'A Partnership for the Future'.

Delhi Police and CRPF Marching Contingents Awarded top Honours in Republic Day Parade 2024

  • According to an official statement from the Ministry of Defence, the Delhi Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) emerged as the winners of the best marching contingents in the Republic Day parade of 2024.
  • In a notable achievement, the Delhi Police secured the coveted 'Best Marching Contingent' trophy in the 'Judges Choice category,' while the CRPF claimed the top spot in the 'Popular Choice category'.
  • The awards were presented by MoS Defence Ajay Bhatt. The results were announced separately, with one set determined by a panel of judges and the other through an online public vote conducted by MyGov.

Preeti Rajak Becomes First Woman Subedar in Army

  • Champion trap shooter Preeti Rajak became the first woman subedar in the Army, after she was promoted from the havaldar rank.
  • This is for the first time that a woman Army soldier was promoted to a junior commissioned officer (JCO), after the Army opened soldier ranks to women in the Corps of Military Police (CMP).
  • Subedar Rajak had joined the Army (CMP) in December, 2022, based on her proven performance in trap shooting. She is the first meritorious sportswomen in shooting discipline enrolled in the Army as a havaldar.

Joint military exercise - SADA TANSEEQ between India & Saudi Arabia

  • The inaugural edition of Joint Military Exercise 'SADA TANSEEQ' between India and Saudi Arabia is being held from January 29 to February 10 in Rajasthan.
  • The exercise aims to enhance synergy, interoperability and jointmanship by learning and sharing best practices between the Armies of both nations.
  • The joint exercise focuses on counter terrorism operations under United Nations Mandate.

  • The Indian Navy chose Telangana as the location for its second Very Low Frequency (VLF) communication transmission station in the country. This significant development would take place in the Vikarabad district, with the new VLF centre scheduled for completion by 2027.
  • VLF communication is crucial for the Navy to maintain effective communication with ships and submarines, emphasizing the strategic role of the new transmission station.
