Army Deploys Advanced Anti-drone Defense Systems along China Border

  • In response to escalating tensions along the northern borders with China, the Indian Army initiated significant enhancements to its air defence capabilities. Central to this strategic manoeuvre is the deployment of cutting-edge Integrated Drone Detection and Interdiction Systems (IDD&IS), developed domestically in collaboration between the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Bharat Electronics.
  • Jointly developed by DRDO and Bharat Electronics, the Mark-1 variant IDD&IS represents a milestone in India's indigenous defence technology.
  • Multi-layered Approach: These systems offer a multi-layered defence mechanism against hostile drones, combining jamming technology with "hard kill" measures using lasers, thus ensuring comprehensive protection.

NIA Gets New Director General

  • The Centre appointed Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) chief Sadanand Date as the Director General of the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) also appointed two new DGs of the Bureau of Police Research and Development and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
  • Date was among the first few officers who reached one of the places on the night of November 26, 2008, when Mumbai was under attack by 10 terrorists, and engaged in a counter-operation and got injured during the exchange of fire.
  • Date also worked as a DIG in the Central Bureau of Investigation and IG (ops) in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
  • The agency came into existence with the enactment of the National Investigation Agency Act 2008 by the Parliament of India on 31 December 2008, which was passed after the deadly 26/11 terror attack in Mumbai.
  • Headquartered in New Delhi, the NIA has branches in Hyderabad, Guwahati, Kochi, Lucknow, Mumbai, Kolkata, Raipur, Jammu, Chandigarh, Ranchi, Chennai and Imphal.
  • The founding Director-General of NIA was Radha Vinod Raju, and he served until 31 January 2010.

CBI, Europol Sign Working Arrangement for Cooperative Relations

  • The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Europol entered into a significant Working Arrangement aimed at combating crime and fostering cooperation between the two agencies. This collaborative effort underscores the necessity of global partnerships in addressing modern-day challenges posed by transnational crime networks.
  • Europol Executive Director Catherine De Bolle and CBI Director Praveen Sood signed the Working Arrangement in a virtual event.
  • The signing ceremony took place simultaneously in New Delhi and the Hague, demonstrating the commitment of both parties to enhancing collaboration.
  • The Working Agreement enables cooperation between all law enforcement agencies in India and the 27 European countries represented by Europol, as well as third countries and organizations associated with Europol.

India Joins Hands with Mozambique and Tanzania for TRILAT-2024 Maritime Exercise

  • The Indian Navy is participating in the second edition of the India-Mozambique-Tanzania Trilateral Exercise (IMT TRILAT-2024), a joint maritime exercise, which will conclude on March 29, 2024. The Indian Naval Ships INS Tir and INS Sujata are representing India in this trilateral exercise.
  • The first edition of the IMT TRILAT exercise was conducted in October 2022, where the Indian Naval Ship INS Tarkash participated alongside the Navies of Tanzania and Mozambique.
  • The current edition of the exercise is planned in two phases:
  • Harbor Phase (21-24 March)
  • INS Tir and INS Sujata will engage with the respective Navies at the ports of Zanzibar (Tanzania) and Maputo (Mozambique).
  • This phase will begin with a Planning Conference.
  • Joint harbor training activities like Damage Control, Firefighting, Visit Board Search and Seizure (VBSS) procedures, Medical Lectures, Casualty Evacuation, and Diving operations will be conducted.
  • Sea Phase (24-27 March)
  • Practical aspects of countering asymmetric threats, VBSS procedures, boat handling, maneuvers, and firing exercises will be covered.
  • A joint Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) surveillance is also planned.
  • The exercise will conclude with a joint debrief scheduled at Nacala (Mozambique).

NCC & NPCIL Ink MoU to Raise Awareness on Peaceful Use of Nuclear Power through Various Programme...

  • National Cadet Corps (NCC) and Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in New Delhi to conduct various awareness programmes throughout the country to enhance public perceptions on peaceful use of nuclear power and disseminate scientific & authentic information. The MoU was signed between DG NCC Lt Gen Gurbirpal Singh and Executive Director (Corporate Communication & Corporate Planning), NPCIL BVS Shekhar.
  • The NPCIL will provide resource persons in this initiative for field engagements with the NCC during the camps and various activities by educating the cadets. The MoU also facilitates a unique opportunity to the cadets to visit various facilities of NPCIL across the country, thereby giving a first-hand experience on peaceful use of nuclear energy, its technical and technological aspects.
  • The DG NCC described the MoU as one of the initiatives by the NCC to broaden the horizon of cadets, which will lead to a more aware and responsible youth.

Australia, Britain Sign Defence Cooperation Agreement

  • Australia and Britain signed a new defence and security agreement that makes it easier for their defence forces to operate together in each other's countries and Australia chose BAE Systems to help build new submarines.
  • British Foreign Secretary David Cameron and Defence Secretary Grant Shapps were in Australia for annual talks with their counterparts in Adelaide.
  • The treaty signed requires the two nations to consult each other if they come under threat.

Raksha Mantri Trophies for Best AFMS Hospitals for 2022

  • The Raksha Mantri Trophies for the Best and Second Best Command Hospitals of the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) for the year 2022 were awarded in New Delhi.
  • The Command Hospital (Southern Command), Pune was judged as the Best Command Hospital, while the Command Hospital (Central Command), Lucknow was the Second Best for 2022.
  • The trophies were presented by Lt Gen Daljit Singh, Director General Armed Forces Medical Services and Senior Colonel Commandant, Army Medical Corps.
  • Lt Gen Singh complimented the two hospitals on their outstanding performance and acknowledged the commendable services rendered by the AFMS.
  • The Raksha Mantri Trophy was instituted in 1989 to recognise excellence in healthcare services by Armed Forces Hospitals and foster a spirit of competition among them.
  • A selection committee headed by an AFMS Lt Gen recommends hospitals for the award each year based on objective performance indicators assessed during on-site visits.
