Justice Tashi Rabstan Appointed Acting Chief Justice of J&K and Ladakh High Court

  • The President of India appointed Justice Tashi Rabstan, senior-most Judge of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh as Acting Chief Justice of the High Court.
  • Justice Tashi Rabstan was appointed as Acting Chief Justice of the High Court upon elevation of Justice N. Kotiswar Singh, Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court as Judge of the Supreme Court of India.
  • Justice Rabstan graduated and also did an LLB from the University of Jammu (JU).
  • He was enrolled as an Advocate on March 6, 1990, in the Bar Council of Jammu and Kashmir and started practising in the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh and various other High Courts on arbitrations, constitution, service, election, civil, and criminal matters.

Supreme Court Gets 2 New Judges, First From Manipur

  • The Supreme Court got two more judges after President Droupadi Murmu cleared the appointments of Justice N. Kotiswar Singh and Justice R. Mahadevan. The appointments were announced by Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal.
  • The Supreme Court Collegium had earlier recommended the elevation of these two judges. With these two appointments, the Supreme Court has its sanctioned strength of 34 judges, including Chief Justice of India D. Y. Chandrachud.
  • Justice N. Kotiswar Singh was the Chief Justice of the High Court for Jammu and Kashmir.
  • He is the first from Manipur to be appointed as a Judge of the apex court. An alumnus of Kirori Mal College and Campus Law Centre, Delhi University, he started his career as an advocate in 1986.
  • Justice R. Mahadevan is an alumnus of Madras Law College.

General Counsels' Association of India Asks Law Ministry for Statutory Recognition of General Cou...

  • Following a similar request made by the Society of Indian Law Firms (SILF) to the Bar Council of India (BCI), the General Counsels' Association of India (GCAI) submitted a representation to Union Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal seeking statutory recognition of general counsel and in-house lawyers as legal practitioners.
  • Dr. Sanjeev Gemawat, founder of GCAI, apprised the Minister that regulation and recognition of over 50,000 general counsel practicing law in India is extremely important.
  • GCAI's representation to the Minister highlighted that the corporate sector is being looked after by trained legal practitioners. However, even though they deal with all facets of Indian laws, regulatory compliances, adjudication, arbitration and litigation, they are not recognised as "advocates" under Indian laws, thereby not being regulated by any professional code of conduct or a regulatory body.
  • Therefore, GCAI suggested that there should be a suitable amendment to Indian laws, primarily the Advocates Act, 1961 and the Bar Council of India Rules, 1975, so that due regulation and recognition are provided to the legal services by general counsel.

Need to Teach Law in Regional Languages: CJI

  • Emphasising the need to make law and legal education accessible to millions of Indian citizens, Chief Justice of India D. Y. Chandrachud said that universities should come together to prepare teaching modules in regional languages.
  • Addressing the 3rd Convocation at Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia National Law University (RMLNLU), Lucknow, the CJI said that a survey of 81 universities and colleges conducted by the Research Department of the Supreme Court found that the common people faced difficulties in understanding various schemes relating to their rights due to their inability to understand English.

Justice Aalia Neelum Sworn in as First Woman Chief Justice of Lahore High Court

  • Justice Aalia Neelum took oath as the Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court (LHC) of Pakistan, making her the first woman to be elevated as the court's top judge.
  • Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider Khan administered the oath of office to her.
  • Punjab province's first woman Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz was also present at the oath-taking ceremony.
  • Justice Neelum stood third in the seniority list of judges of the LHC but the Judicial Commission of Pakistan headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa had decided to consider her nomination for the office of the LHC chief justice.

SC Appoints Former CJI Lalit as Head of Search Panels for V-Cs in West Bengal

  • With the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government and the West Bengal Governor at loggerheads over the appointment of Vice-Chancellors for state-run universities, the Supreme Court appointed former CJI U. U. Lalit as the chairperson of the search-cum-selection committees for shortlisting names for appointment.
  • A bench of Justices Surya Kant and K. V. Viswanathan authorised the Chairman to constitute separate or joint Search-cum-Selection Committees for one or more Universities, keeping in view the nature of subjects/disciplines in which education is being imparted in such pooled Universities.
