Professor Karuna Gokarn Appointed First Woman Principal of St. Xavier's College, Mumbai
St. Xavier's College, Mumbai, appointed Professor (Dr) Karuna Gokarn as its first woman principal in the institution's 156-year history.
She began her journey as a biology teacher, later leading the biotechnology department, and went on to take up several academic and administrative responsibilities within the college.
Gokarn brings a wealth of experience to her new role. She was made interim principal in May 2025 following the retirement of Professor Rajendra Shinde.

Maldives First to Achieve Elimination of Mother-to-child Transmission of HIV, Syphilis, Hepatitis B
In 2025, the World Health Organisation validated the Maldives for eliminating mother-to-child transmission of hepatitis B, while maintaining its earlier validation for HIV and syphilis.
This makes the Maldives the first country in the world to achieve 'triple elimination'.
"The Maldives has shown that with strong political will and sustained investment in maternal and child health, elimination of mother-to-child transmission of these deadly diseases, and the suffering they bring, is possible," said WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
