Canada Govt Ends Fast-track Student Visas

  • In a decision that will impact applicants from India, and at a time when diplomatic ties between the two countries are strained, Canada ended its popular, fast-track student visa programme with immediate effect.
  • The Student Direct Stream (SDS) programme was launched in 2018 to provide faster processing for eligible post-secondary students from 14 countries, including India. Besides a shorter processing time, the approval rates were also higher under the programme.

IIT Kanpur's SATHEE, MoE Launch 45-day Crash Course for JEE Mains 2025

  • SATHEE, a joint initiative by IIT Kanpur and the Ministry of Education, introduced a focused 45-day crash course designed for students preparing for the JEE Mains exam in January 2025. Starting on November 11, 2024, this intensive course aims to provide structured resources and targeted study plans to boost students' readiness for the highly competitive JEE Mains.
  • The SATHEE crash course offers an array of educational tools and features to support student learning.
  • Additionally, students have access to daily practice questions, allowing them to strengthen their understanding and apply concepts practically. A specially crafted Mock Test series also forms part of the course, providing students with a realistic exam experience to build confidence and evaluate their preparation.

Karnataka Government Hikes Incentive Funds for SC/ST Students in Top Institutions

  • The Karnataka government announced an increase in incentive funds for SC and ST students pursuing education at prestigious national institutes. The decision aims to provide enhanced financial support to students enrolled in leading institutions such as IITs, IIMs, IISc, and NITs.
  • Karnataka's Social Welfare Minister, H. C. Mahadevappa, shared the update, highlighting the state's commitment to empowering students.
  • Previously set at Rs. 1 lakh, the fund has now been proposed to be increased to Rs. 2 lakh.
  • In addition to this, the state government has introduced a new initiative to support SC students who achieve remarkable academic success.

IIT Bhubaneswar and MOSart Labs Launch Diploma in Chip Design

  • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhubaneswar, in collaboration with MOSart Labs, introduced a professional diploma programme in semiconductor technology and chip design for engineering graduates. MOSart Labs, a private organisation, focusses on providing skill training for professionals.
  • The course is designed to enhance the skills of engineering graduates and prepare them for careers in various aspects of very-large-scale integration (VLSI). This includes semiconductor technology, analog and digital design, design verification, physical and layout design, as well as testing and validation.

West Bengal Introduces CCTV and Live-streaming for MBBS Exams

  • The West Bengal University of Health Sciences implemented new measures for conducting MBBS exams in the state's medical colleges. In line with the standard operating procedures (SOPs) introduced under the guidance of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who also serves as the state's Health Minister, all MBBS exams will now be conducted under CCTV surveillance and live-streamed for additional oversight.
  • To maintain exam integrity, answer sheets will no longer display student names but will use barcodes for identification. Seating arrangements will also follow an alternating odd-even roll number pattern to discourage copying among students.
  • These measures align with demands from junior doctors who advocated for stricter examination protocols after a recent tragic incident at a hospital, where a woman medic was allegedly assaulted and killed in August.

Ayurveda Biology Now a Subject in NET Exam

  • UGC National Eligibility Test (NET) 2024 for the first time included 'Ayurveda Biology' as one of its subjects, marking a significant step toward blending traditional knowledge systems with mainstream academic fields.
  • This decision, aimed at promoting Ayurveda within the educational framework, was approved during the University Grants Commission's (UGC) 581st meeting, based on proposals from an expert panel.

IIT Delhi Becomes India's Top Institute, Overtakes IIT Bombay: QS Asia University Rankings

  • The Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-D) earned the top spot in India in the 'QS World University Rankings: Asia 2025', thanks to improvements in eight indicators, most prominently, staff with PhD, in which it climbed by 58 places.
  • Meanwhile, the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB) got the second spot.
  • Regionally, IIT Delhi climbed to 44th rank from 46th rank, taking the national top position and overtaking last year's leader, IIT Bombay which slipped from 40th rank to the 48th rank regionally.
  • It is not just IIT Bombay that saw a decline, some other top varsities such as IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur, IISc and IIT Kanpur also observed a drop in their rankings. While IIT Bombay fell by eight ranks, IIT Madras saw a drop of three years (from 53 to 56 this year). The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and IIT Kanpur saw a decline of four ranks each as IISc fell from 58 to 62 this year and IIT-K fell from 63 to 67 this year. IIT Kharagpur, however, saw a decline of only one rank as it fell from 59 to 60th rank this year.
