Madison Marsh Crowned the Miss America 2024

  • Madison Marsh, a lieutenant in the US Air Force and a master's student in the public policy program at the Harvard Kennedy School, emerged victorious at the 2024 Miss America pageant. Representing Colorado, Marsh made history as the first-ever active-duty Air Force officer to hold the national title.

Malayalam Music Director K. J. Joy Passes Away

  • Malayalam music director K. J. Joy passed away in Chennai. He was 77 years old. Joy, is known as the first 'techno musician' in the Malayalam film music world for his use of instruments like the keyboard in the 1970s.
  • K. J. Joy, born in 1946 at Nellikunnu in Thrissur district of Kerala, composed music for more than two hundred films during his decades-long career in the film industry. He made his debut in Malayalam cinema in 1975 and since then he was the architect of many songs that captivated and enthralled people.

Renowned poet Munawwar Rana Dies

  • Renowned poet Munawwar Rana, one of India's most popular poets known for his unique voice and style, died at the age of 71.
  • Born in November 1952, Rana belonged to Uttar Pradesh's Raebareli. The poet, who wrote in Hindi and Urdu, was a prominent name in Mushaira circles in India and abroad.
  • He learned poetry under the mentorship of legendary poets Ali Abbas Khan Bekhud and Wali Aasi.
  • In 2014, he was honoured with the Sahitya Akademi Award for his poem, 'Shahdaba'. However, he had returned the award, alleging 'intolerance' in the country. In 2012 he was awarded Maati Ratan Samman by Shaheed Shodha Sansthan for his services to Urdu literature.
  • He also received other awards, including the Ameer Khusro Award, the Mir Taqi Mir Award, the Ghalib Award, the Dr. Zakir Hussain Award, and the Saraswati Samaj Award, throughout his career.

Renowned Classical Singer Prabha Atre Passes Away

  • Renowned classical singer Prabha Atre passed away at the age of 92.
  • Born on September 13, 1932, Atre was known as a multi-faceted personality. Besides being a classical vocalist, she also excelled as an academician, researcher, composer and author. A science and law graduate, she had a doctorate in music. She was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, the nation's second-highest civilian honour, in January 2022. She was earlier honoured with the Padma Shri award in 1990 and the Padma Bhushan in 2002.

Malayalam Filmmaker Vinu Passes Away

  • Popular Malayalam filmmaker Vinu, who helmed a handful of hit movies in collaboration with director Suresh passed away at the age of 73.
  • The Suresh-Vinu pair gave several successful Malayalam movies, including Mangalam Veettil Manaseshwari Gupta, Kusruthi Kattu and Ayushman Bhava among others.
  • Their last collaborative effort was the 2008 movie Kanichukulangarayil CBI.

Maestro Ustad Rashid Khan Passes Away

  • The Indian classical music world mourned the passing of Ustad Rashid Khan, a towering figure who left an indelible mark on the Rampur-Sahaswan Gharana and beyond.
  • Born in Uttar Pradesh's Badayun, Rashid Khan's musical lineage ran deep. His initial training came from his maternal grand-uncle, Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan, laying the foundation for his exquisite vocal skills. It was under Nissar Hussain Khan's tutelage that he delivered his debut concert at the tender age of eleven, already showcasing the promise of a remarkable career.
  • He was conferred with the prestigious Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awards, and in 2012, West Bengal bestowed upon him the Banga Bhushan, recognizing his contribution to the state's artistic landscape.

Former TCS Executive Director Phiroz Vandrevala Passes Away

  • Phiroz Vandrevala, former director on the board of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), passed away at the age of 70.
  • Vandrevala joined TCS in 1982 and served as a key part of the leadership team over the decades, including serving as Executive Director of the company between 2007-2016.
  • As Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of its UK-based subsidiary Diligenta, he led TCS' life insurance and pension's industry business.
  • Vandrevala also served as Chairman of NASSCOM, Co-Chair of the Indo-British Partnership, and represented the industry and country in many other important global forums.

Football: Brazilian World Cup Winner Mario Zagallo Passes Away

  • Mário Zagallo, who won two World Cups as a player, one as a coach and another as an assistant coach for Brazil, died. He was 92.
  • The first person to win the World Cup both as a player and a manager, Zagallo is for many Brazilian football fans synonymous with patriotism, grit and glory.
  • He was Brazil's forward when they won the World Cup in 1958 in Sweden and 1962 in Chile, and one of the first players to act as a false winger, playing between midfielders and strikers.
