Indian Navy Rolls Out '360 Degree Appraisal Mechanism'

The Indian Navy, known for its commitment to excellence and continuous improvement, embarked on a transformative initiative known as the '360 Degree Appraisal Mechanism.' This initiative recognises the invaluable contributions of both women and men in whites and aims to enhance their professional and personal development.
The Indian Navy has always prioritised its personnel as the cornerstone of its operational efficiency. The men and women who serve in white uniforms play a pivotal role in the Indian Navy's 'SHIPS FIRST' approach, which places the safety and effectiveness of naval operations above all else. This approach underscores the critical importance of having a skilled, motivated, and cohesive workforce.
Traditionally, the Indian Navy relied on periodic Confidential Reports submitted by senior officers as the primary mechanism for evaluating its personnel. While this system had its merits, it also had inherent limitations.
In response to these challenges, the Indian Navy introduced the '360 Degree Appraisal Mechanism.' This innovative initiative aims to address the shortcomings of the previous system by incorporating a broader perspective into the evaluation process.
The '360 Degree Appraisal Mechanism' involves a systematic survey process that includes input from a variety of sources, such as peers and subordinates, in addition to the traditional senior officer evaluations. The survey encompasses a wide range of questions, covering aspects like professional knowledge, leadership qualities, suitability in war and crisis situations, and potential for holding higher ranks.

Sagar Defence Unveils Vamana Autonomous Underwater Vehicle

Mumbai-based start-up Sagar Defence introduced its cutting-edge 'Vamana' Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), specially designed for the Indian Navy. The unveiling took place at the Indian Defence Expo (iDEX), showcasing India's growing autonomous prowess in underwater technology.
The Vamans AUV is a remarkable addition to India's naval capabilities. It boast to operate independently or as part of a coordinated swarm. This flexibility makes it a versatile asset for various maritime missions, including surveillance, reconnaissance, mine detection and more.

Air Chief Unveils New Ensign at Air Force Day Parade in Prayagraj

Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal V. R. Chaudhari unveiled a new ensign of the Indian Air Force (IAF), replacing the existing one that was adopted more than seven decades back.
The IAF chief released the new ensign at the 91st IAF Day celebrations in Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj.
In the new ensign, the IAF crest features in the top right corner.
The unveiling of the new ensign by the IAF came over a year after the Navy made changes in its ensign shedding its colonial past.
The existing ensign was adopted in 1950, replacing the Royal Indian Air Force ensign that featured the Union Jack and the RIAF roundel (red, white and blue).

Eastern Command of Indian Army to Host Mega Defence Event 'East Tech 2023' in Guwahati

The Eastern Command of the Indian Army will host a mega defence event 'East Tech 2023', to showcase its latest defence technology.
The two-day event, the first of its kind in Assam, will be held at the Maniram Dewan Trade Centre in Guwahati on October 10 and October 11, 2023.
The event is an initiative to identify cutting-edge technologies needed for solving the operational challenges in the Eastern sector of the country and the Indian Army as a whole.
The event aims to facilitate the Eastern Command in meeting its operational challenges by incorporating contemporary indigenous technologies.
The event-cum-demonstration, being carried out for the first time in the entire North-eastern region, is a joint effort of the lndian Army and the Assam government.
The Eastern Command formed on November 1, 1920 with its headquarters at Kolkata is the oldest and largest command of the Indian Army spread around 10 states with its troops in coordination with all the three elements of the Indian armed forces and the paramilitary forces deployed to counter any threats from its neighbouring countries.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Releases Fifth Positive Indigenisation List

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) released the fifth Positive Indigenisation list of 98 items, such as certain categories of combat vehicles and drones, sensors, weapons and ammunitions, to give more exposure to domestic industry and reduce dependence on imports of the military hardware.
The latest indigenisation list, prepared by the Department of Military Affairs, lays special focus on import substitution of components of major systems which are being developed and likely to translate into firm orders in the next five to ten years.
The items in the list will provide ample visibility and opportunity to the domestic industry to understand the trend and futuristic needs of the Armed Forces and create requisite R&D and manufacturing capacity within the country.

Navy Brings Out Dual-chip Debit Card for Offline Transaction by Personnel in High Seas

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh unveiled a unique dual-chip debit card that has been developed primarily to facilitate naval personnel at high seas carry out offline transactions if required. The 'SBI NAVeCash Card' can be used in online mode (as a regular debit card) as well as in offline mode while at sea with no direct connectivity with banks.
It is a one-of-its-kind dual-chip debit card developed by the State Bank of India (SBI) and the Indian Navy.

India Gets Going with Project Kusha

The Defence Ministry cleared the Project Kusha of the Indian Air Force under which it is going to get five units of the Long Range Surface to Air Missile (LR-SAM) which would be similar to the capabilities of the Russian-origin S-400 air defence missile systems, three squadrons of which have already been inducted in the service.
The Project Kusha was given approval for worth around Rs. 21,700 crores and would be carried out by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) jointly with private and public sector industry.
