Dominica is set to create the world's first sperm whale reserve, designating a swath of ocean where large ships and commercial fishing are restricted and visitors can swim alongside the gentle marine giants.
The Caribbean nation hoped the new protected zone of 300 square miles (nearly 800 square kilometres) off its western coast, roughly the size of the island itself, would boost valuable tourism revenue but also help sequester more carbon in the deep sea, an often overlooked benefit of whale conservation.
Sperm whales are the largest toothed predators on Earth, living in matrilineal societies with distinct cultures and dialects.

Unprecedented Seismic Activity in Iceland Sparks Concerns
Iceland is on high alert as a seismic swarm, marked by 800 earthquakes in 14 hours, raises concerns of an imminent volcanic eruption in the Reykjanes peninsula. The Iceland Met Office has issued a stark warning of a "considerable" likelihood of a volcanic eruption in the coming days, following a series of seismic events that have rattled the country.
This seismic activity has prompted the declaration of a state of emergency in Iceland. On November 10, Iceland experienced an extraordinary swarm of earthquakes, with a staggering 800 quakes hitting the southwestern Reykjanes peninsula in less than 14 hours.
Over the preceding 24 hours, a total of 1,400 earthquakes were recorded, adding to the already alarming tally of 24,000 seismic events since late October. The most potent quake, measuring 5.2 in magnitude, struck approximately 40 km from Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland.

Uttarakhand Government Establishes Rajaji Tiger Reserve Conservation Foundation

IIT Madras, Tel Aviv University Develop Effective Aerogel-adsorbents
Researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) and Tel Aviv University, Israel, developed an aerogel adsorbent that can remove trace pollutants from wastewater.
This graphene-modified silica aerogel removes over 76 per cent of trace pollutants (PPM level) in continuous flow conditions, offering a sustainable path for large-scale water purification. The research team is dedicated to enhancing these results for large-scale applications.
The research was led by Rajnish Kumar from IIT Madras and included Subhash Kumar Sharma and P. Ranjani, Research Scholars, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Madras and Hadas Mamane, School of Mechanical Engineering, Tel Aviv University, Israel.
