Dharmendra Pradhan releases 'Empowering India - Ideas for Action by Scientists and Engineers' Book

  •  Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has released a book - 'Empowering India - Ideas for Action by Scientists and Engineers' authored by Prof. T. Pradeep, a Padma Shri Awardee and Institute Professor, Department of Chemistry, IIT Madras, and Mr. Krishnan Narayanan, President, IITMAA and itihaasa Research and Digital.
  • IIT Madras faculty and an alumnus have authored the book exploring ideas about what the leading research and educational institutions should do for India@100 (100 years of Independence). The book has been published by the Indian Academy of Sciences and is part of IIT Madras Alumni Association's (IITMAA) thought leadership activities.
  • Over 100 scientists, including about 40 alumni of IIT Madras, have shared their inputs for the book. The proceeds from the book sales would be contributed towards the cause of science (through the Academy).
  • Speaking about 'Empowering India - Ideas for Action by Scientists and Engineers', Prof. T. Pradeep, Institute Professor, Department of Chemistry, IIT Madras, said, "We believe that the book will be of great value in building NEW India. It has 30 solid recommendations spread across 7 specific areas. If these are incorporated in our planning and policies, we are sure that India will be at its rightful place in 2047."

A New Book "How Prime Ministers Decide", by Journalist Neerja Chowdhury

  • A new book, titled 'How Prime Ministers Decide', by veteran journalist Neerja Chowdhury recalls the drama that led to Sonia's announcement, prompted by Rahul's fear for his mother's life. A new book also claimed that former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had good relations with several RSS leaders but carefully kept a distance between the organisation and herself.
  • In 'How Prime Ministers Decide', journalist Neerja Chowdhury analyses the operating styles of the country's Prime Ministers through the prism of six decisions of historic significance - the strategy that Indira Gandhi devised to return to power in 1980 post-Emergency, the Shah Bano case, the Mandal Commission, the Babri Masjid incident, Atal Bihari Vajpayee's nod to nuclear tests, and the Indo-US nuclear deal under Manmohan Singh.

Indian-origin Author Chetna Maroo's Debut Novel Makes the Cut for Booker Prize Long List

  • London-based Indian-origin author Chetna Maroo's debut novel 'Western Lane' is among 13 books to make the cut for the 2023 Booker Prize long list.
  • Kenya-born Maroo's novel, set within the context of the British Gujarati milieu, has been praised by the Booker judges for its use of the sport of squash as a metaphor for complex human emotions. It revolves around the story of an 11-year-old girl named Gopi and her bonds with her family.
  • 'Western Lane' is one of four debut novels that make up this year's (2023) so-called "Booker Dozen" of 13 long listed books, alongside 'If I Survive You' by Jonathan Escoffery, 'Pearl' by Siân Hughes and 'All the Little Bird-Hearts' by Viktoria Lloyd-Barlow.
  • Sebastian Barry's 'Old God's Time', Paul Harding's 'The Other Eden', Ayobami Adebayo's 'A Spell of Good Things', Paul Lynch's 'Prophet Song', Martin Macinnes' 'In Ascension', Tan Twan Eng's 'The House of Doors', Paul Murray's 'The Bee Sting', Sarah Bernstein's 'Study for Obedience', and Elaine Feeney's 'How to Build a Boat' make up the rest of the long list.
