Kerala Schools Reopen with New Textbooks, Evaluation System after Summer Break
Schools in Kerala reopened after a two-month summer holiday, welcoming students with the State government's 'Praveshanolsavam' event to mark the beginning of the new academic year. This year (2024), significant changes were introduced, including revised textbooks and a new answer sheet evaluation system.
Revised textbooks for Classes 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 now include chapters promoting gender equality, marking the first update in a decade. Another major change is the reintroduction of minimum marks requirements for all subjects in Class 10, which had been discontinued in 2005. Continuous assessment will no longer involve grading on a curve, and the expectation of 100% pass rates has been eliminated.
Additionally, the government has decided to end the 'all pass' policy for Classes 1 to 9, which previously ensured no student failed up to Class 9. Education Minister V. Sivankutty stated that studies and examinations will now be conducted more rigorously to improve educational standards.
