World Heritage Week

  • Every year, from November 19 to 25, the world comes together to celebrate World Heritage Week, a global festival dedicated to promoting the conservation of cultural and historical treasures. Recognised and championed by UNESCO, this week serves as a poignant reminder of our collective responsibility to safeguard the world's most significant sites for the benefit of present and future generations.
  • Founded in 1945, World Heritage Week was established to foster intellectual and moral solidarity in the aftermath of two devastating world wars. It was envisioned as a means to contribute to lasting global peace. Over the years, the week has evolved into a celebration that goes beyond festivities, actively urging people, communities, governments and individuals to participate in the preservation of invaluable heritage sites.
  • The theme of World Heritage Week 2024 is 'Discover and Experience Diversity' and the goal is to promote awareness and appreciation for these unique sites.

International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

  • The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is observed every year on November 25.
  • In 1993, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 48/104 for the Elimination of Violence against Women which defines this type of violence as "any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual, or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life."
  • Consequently, to solidify this decision, in 1999 the General Assembly proclaimed 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji Martyrdom Day

  • Guru Tegh Bahadur Martyrdom Day is observed every year on November 24. He is the ninth guru in the lineage of Sikh saints. He is also called 'Hind ki Chadar', or 'Shield of India'.
  • He laid down his life for the rights of a community of people who were not even of his religion. He was beheaded in the year 1675 at the orders of the Mughal emperor, Aurangzeb. He was martyred in Delhi, at Chandni Chowk.

Fibonacci Day

  • Fibonacci Day is observed on November 23 annually to honour one of the most influential mathematicians of the Middle Ages namely Leonardo Bonacci.
  • One of the most important mathematicians of the Middle Ages, Leonardo Bonacci — later known as Fibonacci, "the son of" Bonacci — invented a sequence of numbers that shows up constantly in nature, physics, and design.
  • In 1202, Fibonacci published "Liber Abaci", introducing Europe to the Hindu-Arabic system and his now-famous sequence.
  • Starting with 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, the Fibonacci sequence is created by adding up the two previous numbers to get the next one. Fibonacci's original example for his sequence pondered the population growth of rabbits. If starting with one pair, and each month that pair bears a new pair, the number of rabbits will grow at a rate consistent with his pattern of numbers.

World Television Day

  • World Television Day is celebrated annually on November 21 to draw attention to the influence of television on people and society. The UN General Assembly set this observance in December 1996 in honour of the first World Television Forum that happened on November 21-22, 1996.

World Philosophy Day

  • World Philosophy Day is an international day proclaimed by UNESCO celebrated every 3rd Thursday of November (on November 21 in 2024).
  • In 2005 the UNESCO General Conference proclaimed that World Philosophy Day would be celebrated every third Thursday of November. In establishing World Philosophy Day UNESCO strives to promote an international culture of philosophical debate that respects human dignity and diversity. The Day encourages academic exchange and highlights the contribution of philosophical knowledge in addressing global issues.
  • The theme for World Philosophy Day 2024 is "Philosophy: Bridging Social Gaps." This theme highlights the vital role of philosophy in mending the social fabric and fostering a more cohesive society.

World Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Day

  • World Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Day has been observed every year on the third Wednesday of November since 2002. It is a global healthcare event to raise awareness of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), amongst the public around the world. Activities have been held in over 50 countries by various organisations, making this day one of the world's most important COPD awareness and education events.

World Children's Day

  • World Children's Day is observed every year on November 20. This is a global celebration dedicated to the welfare, rights, and future of children.
  • World Children's Day was first established in 1954 as Universal Children's Day. In 1959, the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child on November 20. It is also the date in 1989 when the UN General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
  • The theme for World Children's Day 2024 is 'Listen to the Future.'
