World Zoonoses Day

  • Every year on July 6, the world observes World Zoonoses Day, a crucial global health awareness initiative that underscores the importance of understanding, preventing, and controlling zoonotic diseases. These diseases, also known as zoonoses, are infections transmitted between animals and humans.
  • On July 6, 1885, French chemist and microbiologist Louis Pasteur successfully administered the first-ever vaccine for a zoonotic disease – rabies. This marked a turning point in understanding and managing diseases transmitted from animals.
  • The establishment of World Zoonoses Day in 2007 served as a tribute to Pasteur's legacy. It recognised the ongoing need for research and development in the fight against zoonotic diseases.

International Day of Cooperatives

  • The International Day of Cooperatives is observed annually on the first Saturday of July (July 5 in 2025).
  • The history of the International Day of Cooperatives dates back to the early 20th century, when the cooperative movement gained traction across the world. The International Cooperative Alliance established the first International Cooperative Day in 1923 to honour the ideals and principles of cooperation.
  • In December 1992, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed in resolution 47/90 the first Saturday of July 1995 to be International Day of Cooperatives, marking the centenary of the establishment of the International Cooperative Alliance.
  • The theme for International Day of Cooperatives 2025 is 'Cooperatives: Driving Inclusive and Sustainable Solutions for a Better World'.

World Sports Journalists Day

  • Every year World Sports Journalists Day is celebrated on July 2. This special day is dedicated to honouring the efforts and dedication of sports journalists globally.
  • The International Sports Press Association (AIPS) established World Sports Journalists Day on July 2, commemorating the formation day of AIPS as an organisation in 1994 during the Summer Olympics in Paris.

World UFO Day

National Doctor's Day

  • Doctor's Day in India was instituted in 1991 by the Government of India in honour of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, one of the country's most respected physicians and a visionary in public healthcare.
  • Dr. Roy was also the second Chief Minister of West Bengal and a recipient of the Bharat Ratna.

World Asteroid Day

  • World Asteroid Day is celebrated on June 30 every year. The purpose of this day is to make people aware of asteroids and the potentially dangerous situations associated with them.
  • The United Nations General Assembly officially recognised World Asteroid Day in 2016. The date of June 30 was chosen because on this day in 1908, a large asteroid exploded in the Tunguska region of Russia, destroying about 2,000 square kilometres of forest.
