Universal Health Coverage Day

  • Universal Health Coverage Day (UHC Day) is commemorated on December 12 every year. It aims to celebrate the progress towards health for all and raise awareness on the need for strong and resilient health systems in achieving universal health coverage.
  • On December 12, 2012, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution urging nations to accelerate their efforts towards achieving universal healthcare (UHC). The primary developmental objective was to ensure that everyone, regardless of their location, has access to high-quality and affordable healthcare. In 2017, the United Nations officially designated December 12 as Universal Health Coverage Day.
  • The theme for Universal Health Coverage Day is 'Health for All: Time for Action', emphasising the need for immediate and tangible steps in creating the world we want.

UNICEF Day

  • Every year UNICEF Day is celebrated on December 11. The word UNICEF stands for United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund and the purpose served by the organisation is to save children's lives by providing them with humanitarian aid across the world.
  • UNICEF was created as the United Nations International Children Emergency Fund on December 11, 1946, to meet the needs of children affected by World War II. In 1953, the organization became a permanent part of the United Nations System.
  • The theme for UNICEF Day 2023 is 'For every child, every right'.

International Mountain Day

  • International Mountain Day is celebrated annually on December 11 to raise awareness about the importance of mountains and the need to restore their ecosystems.
  • In 2002 that the UN General Assembly declared the UN International Year of Mountains and designated December 11 as International Mountain Day from 2003 onwards. Since then, every year, the day has been celebrated globally with a particular theme.
  • The theme for International Mountain Day 2023 is 'Restoring Mountain Ecosystems'. The theme aims to include mountains in the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030.

Human Rights Day

  • Human Rights Day is celebrated annually across the world on December 10 every year. The date was chosen to honour the United Nations General Assembly's adoption and proclamation, on December 10, 1948, of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).
  • The formal inception of Human Rights Day dates from 1950, after the Assembly passed resolution 423(V) inviting all States and interested organisations to adopt 10 December of each year as Human Rights Day.
  • The theme for Human Rights Day 2023 is 'Freedom, Equality and Justice for All'.

International Anti-Corruption Day

  • Every year, on December 9 International Anti-Corruption Day is observed across the globe. It is a day designated by the United Nations. This day is dedicated to fostering awareness about corruption and worldwide initiatives to address and deter it.
  • The United Nations General Assembly adopted the United Nations Convention against Corruption on October 31, 2003, and appointed the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) as its secretariat. This resolution also marked December 9 as International Anti-Corruption Day to raise awareness about corruption and emphasise the Convention's role in preventing and combating it.
  • International Anti-Corruption Day was first officially held on December 9, 2005.
  • The theme for International Anti-Corruption Day 2023 is 'UNCAC at 20: Uniting the World Against Corruption.'

Armed Forces Flag Day

  • Every year, December 7 is observed as the Armed Forces Flag Day or Flag Day of India to honour the martyrs, veterans and serving personnel of the defence forces. The day has been observed annually since 1949 to remember the services of the Army, Navy and Air Force, and collect funds to ensure their and their family's well-being.
  • Soon after India achieved independence, a need arose to support and encourage the welfare of the defence personnel. On August 28, 1949, a committee was set up under the then Defence Minister of India, which decided to observe Flag Day annually on December 7.
  • In 1993, India's Defence Ministry combined all related welfare funds, including those for war victims and the Kendriya Sainik Board Fund, into one, named the Armed Forces Flag Day Fund (AFFDF).

International Civil Aviation Day

  • The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) marks International Civil Aviation Day every year on December 7.
  • International Civil Aviation Day was first observed by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) on December 7, 1994, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Chicago Convention. Later, the UN General Assembly announced December 7 to be International Civil Aviation Day in 1996.
  • ICAO selects a special anniversary theme for the global day every five years for the entire four-year interim period. The UN body has proposed the theme of International Civil Aviation Day in 2019 until 2023 as, 'Advancing Innovation for Global Aviation Development'.
