  • The annual report, published by Global Finance magazine since 1994, evaluates central bank governors from 101 countries and regions, including the European Union and several regional central banks.
  • The rankings are determined based on a grading scale from A to F, assessing performance in key areas such as inflation control, economic growth goals, currency stability, and interest rate management. An 'A' represents outstanding performance, while an 'F' denotes complete failure.

World's Oldest Person, Maria Branyas Morera, Dies

  • The world's oldest person, Spain's Maria Branyas Morera, who was born in the US in 1907 and lived through two world wars, died at the age of 117.
  • Guinness World Records had officially acknowledged Branyas's status as the world's oldest person in January 2023 after the death of the French nun Lucile Randon aged 118. In the wake of Branyas's death, the oldest living person in the world is Japan's Tomiko Itooka, who was born on May 23, 1908 and is 116 years old, according to the US Gerontology Research Group.
  • The oldest verified person to have ever lived was Jeanne Louise Calment, a Frenchwoman who died in 1997 at the age of 122 years and 164 days.

Former Indian Army Chief General S. Padmanabhan Passes Away

  • Former Chief of Army Staff General Sundararajan Padmanabhan, affectionately known as "Paddy" in army circles, passed away. He was 83. He served as the Chief of Army Staff from September 30, 2000 to 31 December 31, 2002.
  • General Padmanabhan was an alumnus of the prestigious Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC), Dehra Dun, and the National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla in Pune. He was commissioned into the Regiment of Artillery after graduating from the Indian Military Academy (IMA) on December 13, 1959.
  • Before being appointed as the Chief of Army Staff, he was the GOC of Southern Command.
  • He retired on December 31, 2002, after completing more than 43 years of distinguished military service.

ICG DG Rakesh Pal Dies

  • Director General of the Indian Coast Guard, Rakesh Pal, died of a severe cardiac arrest in Chennai. He was 59. He was in Chennai to participate in the Coast Guard function led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
  • Rakesh Pal, was a flag officer of the Indian Coast Guard. He served as the 25th Director General of the Indian Coast Guard. Pal hailed from Uttar Pradesh. After his schooling, he attended the Indian Naval Academy and joined the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) in January 1989
  • He had worked with the Coast Guard for 34 years and became the Director General in July 2023. He was honoured with the Vishist Seva medal for his tremendous contribution to the modernisation and development of the Indian Coast Guard.

Former Meghalaya Chief Minister Salseng C. Marak Passes Away

  • Former Meghalaya Chief Minister Salseng C. Marak passed away aged 83. Marak died due to age-related ailments.
  • Marak was also known as 'Mr Clean' for his relentless pursuit of a corruption-free and progressive Meghalaya.
  • He was the Chief Minister of the state from 1993 to 1998, becoming the first leader to serve a full 5–year term without changing party. He became the Chief Minister when the state was going through political instability during the early 1990s, when regional forces were at the forefront of government formations and takedowns.
  • Marak graduated from Kolkata's Scottish Church College. He was also made the president of Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) in 2003.
  • He had represented the Resubelpara constituency in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly consecutively from the 1970s till 2008.

Renowned DRDO Scientist Ram Narain Agarwal, Father of Agni Missiles, Passes Away

  • Renowned DRDO missile scientist Ram Narain Agarwal, widely celebrated as the 'Father of Agni Missiles', passed away in Hyderabad. Agarwal was a pioneering figure in India's defense research and development, significantly contributing to the country's long-range ballistic missile program.
  • Agarwal led India's Agni missile programme from its inception in 1983 until his retirement in 2005. He spearheaded the development of various versions of the Agni missile, culminating in the successful Agni V, capable of striking targets over 5000 kilometres.
  • In recognition of his contributions, he received numerous accolades. He was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004 by the Prime Minister of India for his contributions to aerospace and the Agni missile. He also received the DRDO Technology Leadership Award and Chandrasekhara Saraswati National Eminence Award. He was honoured with the Padma Shri in 1990 and Padma Bhushan in 2000 by the President of India.

  • On the eve of India's 78th Independence Day, Grammy-winning composer Ricky Kej unveiled a spectacular new rendition of the Indian National Anthem, featuring an impressive collaboration of artists and a Guinness World Record.
  • Kej shared the release of the anthem on social media platform X with the caption, "Honoured to share my epic rendition of our National Anthem of India (Bharat).
  • This rendition brings together top classical musicians from both North and South India, including renowned figures like Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia, Amaan & Ayaan Ali Bangash, and Rahul Sharma.
  • It also features the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra from the UK and a choir of 14,000 tribal children from the Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences.
