Shyam Benegal, India's Parallel Cinema Pioneer, Passes Away

  • Shyam Benegal, who heralded the Indian parallel cinema movement in the 1970s and 1980s with a body of work known for its realism and social commentary, breaking away from the conventions of mainstream Indian cinema, died at the age of 90.
  • In his prolific career, Shyam Benegal made films on diverse issues, documentaries and television serials.
  • Shyam Benegal started his career as a copywriter, and made his first documentary film in Gujarati, 'Gher Betha Ganga' in 1962. His first four feature films 'Ankur' (1973), 'Nishant' (1975), 'Manthan' (1976) and 'Bhumika' (1977) made him a pioneer of the new wave film movement of that period.
  • He also served as the Director of the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) from 1980 to 1986.
  • In 1976, he was honoured by the Government of India with the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian honour of the country, and in 1991, he was awarded Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian honour for his contributions in the field of arts.
  • In 2005, he was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India's highest award in the field of cinema.

Epigamia Co-founder Rohan Mirchandani Passes Away

  • Rohan Mirchandani, co-founder of the renowned yogurt brand Epigamia, passed away. He was 42.
  • Mirchandani, a graduate of NYU Stern and The Wharton School, founded Drums Food International in 2013. Under his leadership, the brand evolved from Hoki Poki ice cream into Epigamia, a household name in yogurt and other dairy products. With over 20,000 retail touchpoints across 30 cities, the company was preparing for a Middle East expansion by 2025-26.

Chennai-Born Caitlin Sandra Neil Crowned Miss India USA 2024

  • Chennai-born Indian American Caitlin Sandra Neil was crowned Miss India USA 2024 at the annual pageant held in New Jersey. The 19-year-old is a second year student at University of California, Davis.
  • Nirali Desia of Illinois and Manini Patel of New Jersey were declared first runner-up and second runner-up in the Miss India USA competition.
  • Meanwhile, Sanskriti Sharma from Illinois was crowned Mrs India USA and Arshita Kathpalia from Washington won the Miss Teen India USA in the pageant organised by the India Festival Committee (IFC).

Om Prakash Chautala Passes Away at 89: Tributes pour in for former Haryana CM

  • Former Haryana Chief Minister and Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) supremo Om Prakash Chautala passed away at the age of 89.
  • Chautala, son of Chaudhary Devi Lal, who served as the 6th Deputy Prime Minister of India, served as the Chief Minister of Haryana for a record four terms, starting in December 1989, with his final term between 1999 and 2005.

  • The Kho Kho Federation of India (KKFI) appointed Bollywood superstar Salman Khan as the brand ambassador for the inaugural Kho Kho World Cup, which will be held in New Delhi from January 13 to 19, 2025. This event will see the participation of teams from 24 countries and is set to boost the global profile of Kho Kho. The tournament aims to showcase the sport's widespread appeal, with an exciting line-up of men's and women's teams competing for the first time on the world stage.
  • Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has partnered with KKFI to provide full support for the event.

Padma Shri Awardee Environmentalist Tulsi Gowda Dies

  • Tulsi Gowda, the renowned environmentalist and Padma Shri awardee known as the "Vruksha Maate" (Mother of Trees), passed away at her residence in Karnataka's Honnali village, Ankola Taluk, Uttara Kannada district. She was 86.
  • Tulsi Gowda dedicated over six decades of her life to environmental conservation, planting and nurturing thousands of trees in Ankola and its surroundings. Her unparalleled knowledge of plants earned her the title "Encyclopaedia of Plants."
