Two More Defence Industrial Corridors

  • In a step towards strengthening India's self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat) in defence production, the government is in an advanced stage of creating two more defence industrial corridors—one in Maharashtra and the other in Assam—in the coming months. This move follows the success of the two existing corridors in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, which have made notable progress since their launch in 2018.
  • The concept of Defence Industrial Corridors was announced in 2017–18 to create specialised hubs for defence manufacturing and innovation.

Army Partners with IITs for Tech-Backed Transformation

  • The Indian Army has turned to leading academic institutions in search of solutions for next-generation warfare. Technology is a central element of what are being described as the Army's 'five pillars' of transformation — a decade-long process that began in 2023.
  • The Army tied-up with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras to establish 'Agnishodh' or the Indian Army Research Cell (IARC) on the campus. It would focus on translating academic research into real-world military applications, with emphasis on additive manufacturing, cybersecurity, quantum computing and unmanned aerial systems.
  • The Army has forged multiple strategic partnerships with IITs across the country.
  • IIT-Kanpur is focusing on joint research in engineering, physical and biomedical sciences, and management.
  • IIT-Gandhinagar is finding a solution for the Army's requirements, including the development of lighter and stronger bullet-proof jackets and materials for bunkers.
  • IIT-Delhi is streamlining the transfer of new technologies from the lab to the field, ensuring that innovations are effectively operationalised.

Operation Alert Launched along Rajasthan Border ahead of Independence Day

  • The Border Security Force (BSF) initiated a high-intensity security drive, 'Operation Alert', along the Rajasthan border in the run-up to Independence Day 2025. This special operation aims to strengthen border security, rehearse Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and counter potential threats.
  • Operation Alert commenced on August 11 and concludes on August 17.

Punjab Launches Anit-Drone System

  • Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal launched an anti-drone system, aiming to check the smuggling of weapons and drugs through drones from Pakistan.
  • The anti-drone system is called 'Baaz Akh'. This system has been deployed as the second line of defence in the border districts in coordination with the Border Security Force.
  • With this Punjab became the first state in the country to have its own anti-drone system deployed at the border areas.

Navies of India, Pakistan Carry Out Drills in Arabian Sea

  • Even as the Operation Sindoor is still going on, the navies of India and Pakistan are carrying out separate drills in the Arabian Sea at the same time for few days.
  • As per defence sources, the navies of both India and Pakistan issued Notice to Airmen (NOTAMs) for carrying out drills in the Arabian Sea in their respective territorial areas.
  • Indian Navy warships are carrying out drills in the Arabian Sea on August 11-12. Pakistan Navy also issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) for carrying out its own naval exercises in its waters.
  • A NOTAM is issued when air traffic movement is restricted for a certain period of time.

Inaugural India-New Zealand Defence Strategic Dialogue Held in New Delhi

  • The inaugural edition of India-New Zealand Defence Strategic Dialogue was held in New Delhi to discuss security perspectives and further bolster bilateral cooperation. The meeting was co-chaired by Joint Secretary (International Cooperation), Ministry of Defence, India Amitabh Prasad and Head of International Branch, Ministry of Defence, New Zealand Kathleen Pearce.
  • Both nations expressed satisfaction at the ongoing defence cooperation and identified means to enhance the existing areas of collaboration, especially in the fields of training, capability building, defence industry, maritime security and multinational cooperation.
  • The Indian side complimented New Zealand for its successful command of CTF-150 in which five Indian Navy personnel were also deputed as staff. Both sides also discussed ways to build up ongoing White Shipping Information Exchange towards enhancement of information sharing.
  • The India-New Zealand Defence Strategic Dialogue was constituted under an MoU signed between the two countries in March 2025.
