Russia to Put First Segment of its Own ISS in Orbit by 2027

  • President Vladimir Putin said that the first segment of Russia's new orbital station, which Moscow sees as the next logical development in space exploration after the International Space Station (ISS), should be put into operation by 2027. In a meeting with space industry officials, Putin also vowed to proceed with Russia's lunar programme despite the failure in August 2023 of its first moon shot in 47 years.

China's Youngest-ever Crew of Astronauts Heads to Space Station

  • The youngest-ever crew of Chinese astronauts departed for China's space station, paving the way for a new generation of 'taikonauts' to advance the country's space ambitions in the future.
  • The spacecraft Shenzhou-17, or 'Divine Vessel', and its three passengers lifted off atop a Long March-2F rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in northwest China.
  • Leading the six-month mission was former air force pilot Tang Hongbo, who was on the first crewed mission to the space station in 2021.

Skyroot Unveils Vikram-1 Rocket

  • Space start-up Skyroot Aerospace unveiled its indigenously built Vikram-1 rocket which is expected to deliver satellites to low earth orbit early next year (2024). Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh also inaugurated 'The MAX-Q Campus', the new headquarters of the start-up at the GMR Aerospace and Industrial Park at Mamidipally in South Hyderabad.
  • Vikram-1 is a multi-stage launch vehicle with a capacity to place around 300 kg payloads in Low Earth Orbit. It is an all-carbon-fibre-bodied rocket that can place multiple satellites into orbit and features 3D-printed liquid engines.
  • Planned to be launched in early 2024, Vikram-I will be Skyroot's second rocket, after the successful launch of the Vikram-S rocket on November 18, 2022.

Study Finds Moon is 40 Million Years Older than Believed

  • For centuries, the origin of Earth's closest celestial companion, the Moon, has been shrouded in mystery.
  • However, recent evidence suggests that the Moon may be significantly older than previously believed, shedding light on its enigmatic history.
  • The prevailing theory regarding the Moon's existence is the "giant-impact theory," which proposes that a Mars-sized planet collided with Earth in the distant past. This cataclysmic event resulted in the ejection of debris, which eventually coalesced to form the Moon.
  • To determine the Moon's age more precisely, scientists turned to lunar crystals obtained from the Apollo 17 mission in 1972. These crystals, composed of zircon, are believed to have formed after the colossal impact event since the high-energy collision would have melted any pre-existing crystals.
  • Using radiometric dating, researchers assessed the rate of decay of the atoms within the zircon crystals to estimate their age. Their findings pushed the Moon's age back by a significant 40 million years, revealing it to be at least 4.46 billion years old.

ISRO Tests the Country's First Human Spaceflight Mission Gaganyaan

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully completed a test launch and recovery of a crew module for the Gaganyaan mission, bringing the country's first human space flight project one step closer to reality. The test involved simulating an emergency situation to ensure the crew module could safely remove itself from the test vehicle and land in the sea. ISRO aims to launch an unmanned flight for the Gaganyaan mission in the first half of 2024, followed by a manned mission around 2025.
