New Gecko Species Discovered in Coonoor Hills

  • Researchers discovered of a new gecko species, Dravidogecko coonoor, in the Nilgiris of Tamil Nadu. This finding adds to the biodiversity of the Western Ghats, a hotspot for endemic species.
  • The new species was identified through extensive field surveys across the Western Ghats. The researchers noted that Dravidogecko coonoor inhabits both urban and natural environments. This includes walls of buildings, branches of plants, and tree bark. The habitat is primarily characterised by montane forests and monoculture plantations, often influenced by human activities.

India Ranks 71st in WEF Energy Transition Index 2025 Despite Efficiency Gains

  • Despite notable progress in energy efficiency and clean energy investment, India slipped to 71st position in the World Economic Forum's (WEF) Energy Transition Index 2025, falling eight places from last year (2024). The index, which ranked 118 countries based on their performance across energy security, sustainability, and equity.
  • The top five countries are Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway, Switzerland, respectively.
  • While India's ranking declined, the WEF acknowledged the country's significant improvements in energy access, regulatory frameworks, and transition readiness.

  • The Bonn Climate Change Conference 2025 commenced on June 16 in Bonn, Germany, bringing together more than 5,000 government delegates, scientists, Indigenous leaders, and civil society actors.
  • This mid-year gathering under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) plays a crucial role in shaping the global climate agenda.
  • Officially known as the Sessions of the Subsidiary Bodies (SBs), this event is second only to the COP (Conference of the Parties) in terms of global importance in climate negotiations.
  • The meeting is led by the SBs of the UNFCCC. There are two permanent SBs of the UNFCCC, the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI) and the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA).

Karnataka Leads Country in Adding Wind Power Capacity

  • Karnataka topped the country in wind power capacity addition for 2024-25, adding 1,331.48 MW — the highest among all states. The achievement was recognised at the Global Wind Day 2025 celebrations, held under the theme 'Pawan-Urja: Powering the Future of India'. Tamil Nadu and Gujarat followed, with additions of 1,136.37 MW and 954.76 MW, respectively.
  • Energy Minister K. J. George received the award from Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi.

AviList: First-ever Unified Global Checklist of Bird Species

  • AviList, the first-ever unified global checklist of bird species, became live in June 2025, after four years of work by the Working Group on Avian Checklists.
  • The new checklist replaces the International Ornithological Committee (IOC) and Clements lists and will be updated annually, according to BirdLife International, the global partnership of non-governmental organisations that strives to conserve birds and their habitats.
