Centre Launches PAIR Programme to Enhance Research in Higher Education

  • The Centre launched the Partnerships for Accelerated Innovation and Research (PAIR) programme, designed to elevate research capabilities in higher education institutions (HEIs) across India with limited research capabilities by fostering collaborations with top-tier institutions.
  • This follows the operationalisation of the programme discussed at the inaugural governing board meeting of the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September this year (2024).
  • The programme will operate through a mentorship-driven hub-and-spoke framework to facilitate systematic research growth across institutions.

IIT Madras, IIT Palakkad Launch Collaborative Educational Initiative

  • In a move to enhance educational opportunities, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) and the Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad (IIT Palakkad) partnered to provide students with access to shared academic resources, research internships, and summer immersion programs.
  • The initiative is designed to leverage the strengths of both institutes, enriching the learning experiences of students in IIT Madras's Bachelor of Science (BS) program in Data Science and Applications and IIT Palakkad's undergraduate courses.
  • Through this collaboration, IITM BS (Data Science and Applications) students who meet the eligibility criteria can fulfil their credit requirements by taking courses at IIT Palakkad. Additionally, the MoU also allows undergraduate students at IIT Palakkad to enroll in courses on Data Science and Programming from the IITM BS programme. The collaboration will also facilitate student exchange programmes, internship opportunities, and other joint initiatives.

UGC Hosts Southern Zone Meet on NEP 2020 Implementation for Autonomous Colleges

  • The University Grants Commission (UGC) organised a Southern Zone Conference for Autonomous Colleges on 'Implementation of NEP 2020' at IIT Madras. The conference witnessed the participation of academics from many institutions who discussed the various aspects of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
  • NEP 2020 was launched in July 2020. All-out efforts are being made to disseminate the details about the policy among various stakeholders and to ensure its implementation by the Higher Educational Institutions.
  • This conference included sessions for academics on topics such as 'Thematic brainstorming by participants on implementation strategies for NEP 2020 participants' on National Credit Framework Implementation, Academic Bank of Credits, Digital Empowerment and Research and Innovation Ecosystem, among other topics.

Swami Vivekananda Vidya Mandir Opens in Silvassa, Inaugurated by President

  • President Droupadi Murmu inaugurated the Swami Vivekananda Vidya Mandir School at Zanda Chowk in Silvassa.
  • During the inauguration she interacted with students and engaged in games and reciting poems with them.
  • In her address, President Murmu spoke about the region's rich historical, cultural, and natural heritage.
  • She emphasised the contribution of youth to building a developed India.

IIM-Kozhikode, Emeritus Launch 'Chief Product Officer (CPO)' Course

  • The Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIMK) collaborated with Emeritus, to launch the 'Chief Product Officer (CPO)' course. This new IIM Kozhikode course will begin on December 29.
  • This programme is designed for senior leaders with over eight years of experience, including aspiring and current CPOs/product leaders, as well as entrepreneurs and executives. It provides the skills needed to develop strategic thinking, customer empathy, effective communication and leadership abilities.
  • Participants will complete two online certificate courses from Kellogg Executive Education: 'AI Applications for Growth' and 'Data Strategy for AI Platforms'.

UGC Launches PhD Excellence Citation to Honour Top Researchers in Academia

  • The University Grants Commission (UGC) introduced the 'PhD Excellence Citation' to honour exceptional research achievements annually across multiple academic fields. This annual award aims to recognise outstanding PhD researchers from disciplines such as science, engineering, social sciences, and Indian languages.
  • Each year, ten citations will be awarded to highlight research that excels in originality, contribution to knowledge, methodology, clarity, impact, and presentation quality.
  • Through this initiative, the UGC hopes to boost research quality in Indian universities and bring national recognition to talented researchers across a broad range of fields.

IIT Madras Partners with ISRO to Establish Research Centre to Study Spacecraft

  • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras collaborated with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to create a Centre of Excellence specialising in research on 'Fluid and Thermal Sciences.' ISRO would provide seed funding of Rs. 1.84 crore towards establishing this centre.
  • This Centre will act as a nodal centre for spacecraft and launch vehicle-related thermal management research activities of ISRO. Thermal problems regarding the design, analysis and testing of various components could be done by leveraging the expertise of IIT Madras faculty.
  • An MoU for this collaboration was signed at IIT Madras by Professor Manu Santhanam, Dean (Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research), IIT Madras and Victor Joseph. T, Director, Directorate of Technology Development & Innovation (DTDI), ISRO, in the presence of Project coordinator Prof. Arvind Pattamatta, Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Madras, and other stakeholders from IIT Madras and ISRO.

Canada Govt Ends Fast-track Student Visas

  • In a decision that will impact applicants from India, and at a time when diplomatic ties between the two countries are strained, Canada ended its popular, fast-track student visa programme with immediate effect.
  • The Student Direct Stream (SDS) programme was launched in 2018 to provide faster processing for eligible post-secondary students from 14 countries, including India. Besides a shorter processing time, the approval rates were also higher under the programme.

IIT Kanpur's SATHEE, MoE Launch 45-day Crash Course for JEE Mains 2025

  • SATHEE, a joint initiative by IIT Kanpur and the Ministry of Education, introduced a focused 45-day crash course designed for students preparing for the JEE Mains exam in January 2025. Starting on November 11, 2024, this intensive course aims to provide structured resources and targeted study plans to boost students' readiness for the highly competitive JEE Mains.
  • The SATHEE crash course offers an array of educational tools and features to support student learning.
  • Additionally, students have access to daily practice questions, allowing them to strengthen their understanding and apply concepts practically. A specially crafted Mock Test series also forms part of the course, providing students with a realistic exam experience to build confidence and evaluate their preparation.

Karnataka Government Hikes Incentive Funds for SC/ST Students in Top Institutions

  • The Karnataka government announced an increase in incentive funds for SC and ST students pursuing education at prestigious national institutes. The decision aims to provide enhanced financial support to students enrolled in leading institutions such as IITs, IIMs, IISc, and NITs.
  • Karnataka's Social Welfare Minister, H. C. Mahadevappa, shared the update, highlighting the state's commitment to empowering students.
  • Previously set at Rs. 1 lakh, the fund has now been proposed to be increased to Rs. 2 lakh.
  • In addition to this, the state government has introduced a new initiative to support SC students who achieve remarkable academic success.
