IIT Kanpur Opens Registrations for Global Cybersecurity Hackathon

  • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur opened the registrations for the Global Cybersecurity Hackathon, 'Hack IITK 2024.'
  • The hackathon is open to cybersecurity enthusiasts, including students, aspiring start-ups, and professionals, and will be conducted in a hybrid format, with the qualification and challenge rounds held online, and the Grand Finale will take place at the IIT Kanpur campus in February 2025.
  • The Hack IITK 2024 is conceptualised by Cybersecurity Technology Innovation Hub (C3iHub) and powered by Techkriti. This flagship event aims to bring together cybersecurity enthusiasts from across the globe to tackle real-world cybersecurity challenges through innovation and competition.

BMW, UNICEF Join Hands to Empower Children in Rural India

  • The BMW Group and UNICEF announced a partnership in India with an aim to transform the educational landscape for 1 lakh children in four states. The partners would focus on foundational learning and STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) skills from early years through adolescence.
  • The partnership will provide access to quality STEM education to adolescent girls from Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas and Tribal Ashramshalas, belonging to the most marginalised groups in hard-to-reach rural areas in Assam, Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.
  • The partnership is part of a global long-term tie-up between the BMW Group and UNICEF to reach more than 10 million children and young people each year through education and training, including learning in STEM subjects in five countries where BMW has large operations, including South Africa, Brazil, Mexico and Thailand.

IIM Kozhikode Launches 'AI for Senior Executives' Programme in India

  • IIM Kozhikode launched its AI for Senior Executives programme in India, in partnership with ed-tech company Emeritus with an additional course from Kellogg Executive Education.
  • This "in-depth and hands-on programme" is designed for a wide range of domain leaders, including senior technical product managers, chief digital officers, directors/VPs of digital transformation, technology/principal/domain consultants, founders of AI startups, and functional heads such as heads of product/marketing/strategy. It prepares them with a deep understanding of AI's transformative potential and insights to align their efforts to organisational AI goals. Through this programme, participants will hone their leadership capabilities while devising a roadmap for implementing AI in their domains effectively.

IIM Kozhikode, SAIL Sign MoU for HR Development and Research

  • The Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIMK) entered into a partnership with the Management Training Institute (MTI) of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) to enhance academic collaboration and human resource development. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was formalised with signatures from Sanjay Dhar, Chief General Manager of MTI-SAIL, and Lt Col Julius George (Retd.).
  • This partnership seeks to combine IIM Kozhikode's academic insights with SAIL's industrial expertise to develop leadership and capacity-building strategies. Prof Debashis Chatterjee, Director of IIM Kozhikode, described the partnership as an effort to prepare professionals to address evolving business challenges and promote sustainable growth.

India's First National Law University Ventures into Liberal Arts with BA (Hons)

  • The National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru, India's first National Law University established in 1986, is all set to launch a three-year BA (Hons) programme in 2025, marking its expansion into liberal arts.

  • The new BA (Hons) programme builds on NLSIU's 35 years of expertise in the social sciences and humanities.

IIT Madras Unveils World's Most Detailed 3D Images of Foetal Brain

  • The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) achieved a groundbreaking milestone by releasing the most detailed high-resolution 3D images of the human fetal brain. Developed by researchers at the Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre, this pioneering project is the first of its kind globally, showcasing over 5,132 digitally captured brain sections at a cellular level using advanced brain mapping technology.
  • The dataset, aptly named DHARANI, is now openly accessible to researchers worldwide through the platform brainportal.humanbrain.in. This initiative significantly advances neuroscience, promising breakthroughs in understanding brain development and treating disorders like learning disabilities and autism.

QS Sustainability Rankings 2025: IIT Delhi Tops India

  • The QS World University Rankings Sustainability 2025 were released and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi emerged as the top-ranked Indian institution. Globally, IIT Delhi holds the 171st position and achieved an impressive 81.1 percentile in the Environmental Sustainability category.
  • IIT Delhi is followed by IIT Kharagpur, ranked 202nd globally, and IIT Bombay, which holds the 234th position.
  • The University of Toronto topped the global QS Sustainability Rankings 2025, excelling in Environmental Sustainability (91 points) and Environmental Research (98.5 points).
  • It is followed by ETH Zurich, with Lund University and the University of California, Berkeley (UCB) tied for third.

Merriam-Webster Names 'Polarization' its 2024 Word of the Year

  • Merriam-Webster's word of the year is one that the dictionary suggests unifies both sides of the aisle.
  • The dictionary publisher said that 'polarization' is its 2024 word of the year, defining it as division into two sharply distinct opposites; especially, a state in which the opinions, beliefs, or interests of a group or society no longer range along a continuum but become concentrated at opposing extremes.

Central School Push: 85 New Kendriya Vidyalayas, 13 in J&K; 28 Navodayas, N-E focus

  • The Union Cabinet approved Rs. 8,231 crore for what may be the largest expansion of central schools in a decade, sanctioning 85 new Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) and 28 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs). The Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir will receive the highest number of new KVs (13), while Arunachal Pradesh will get the most JNVs (8).
  • KVs are intended for children of central government and defence employees. JNVs, on the other hand, are residential schools (from Class VI to XII) established in rural districts to nurture talented students from rural areas.
  • Currently, apart from those newly approved by the Union Cabinet, there are 1,256 functional KVs and 653 functional JNVs.
  • The 85 new central schools will be established over a period of eight years starting from 2025-26, while the 28 JNVs will be set up over five years from 2024-25 to 2028-29.
